Police often have the need for a nonconventional ability in protecting citizenry, EOD, special response teams, quelling riots, etc Hence the need for unconventional weaponry.

Why does the Police need automatic weapons and grenade launchers?

Grenade launchers use anti-violence bomb or tear bomb.

Automatic weapons can use for anti-drug crimes or Anti-terrorists.

Yeah, such as in the China-Burma border, drug crimes have AK rifle, submachinegun etc automatic weapons. Every year, there are a lot of policemen died in there.
