Poll: over 40% of Canadian teens think America is "evil"
by Arthur Weinreb

June 30, 2004

Can West News Services, owners of several Canadian newspapers including the National Post as well as the Global Television Network commissioned a series of polls to determine how young people feel about the issues that were facing the country’s voters. Dubbed "Youth Vote 2004", the polls, sponsored by the Dominion Institute and Navigator Ltd. were taken with a view to getting more young people involved in the political process.

In one telephone poll of teens between the ages of 14 and 18, over 40 per cent of the respondents described the United States as being "evil". That number rose to 64 per cent for French Canadian youth.

This being Canada, the amount of anti-Americanism that was found is not surprising. What is significant is the high number of teens who used the word "evil" to describe our southern neighbour. As Misty Harris pointed out in her column in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, evil is usually associated with serial killers and "kids who tear the legs off baby spiders." These teens appear to equate George W. Bush and Americans with Osama bin Laden and Hitler, although it is unknown if the teens polled would describe the latter two as being evil. Whether someone who orders planes to be flown into heavily populated buildings would fit that description would make a good subject for a future poll.

The Liberal government came into power in 1993 gushing anti-Americanism. Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s communications director, Francoise Ducros, made headlines when she referred to President Bush as a moron. Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish was picked up on a boom microphone saying, "Damn Americans — I hate those bastards". Not only did Parrish not apologize for her remarks, but she later appeared on a television show hosted by alleged comedian Mike Bullard and laughed about the incident. Parrish played to the anti-Americanism of the youthful studio audience by saying that she couldn’t guarantee that she wouldn’t do it again.

Not only did then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien not take any action against his staff or caucus members, he himself engaged in America-bashing. The depth of his anti-Americanism surfaced shortly after the 9/11 attacks when he blamed the arrogance and greed of the West (read the United States) for those attacks.

When Paul Martin assumed office last December, the childish cheap shots ended but, if anything, anti-Americanism became stronger.

Anti-Americanism played a prominent role in the election strategy of the Liberals. Paul Martin portrayed himself as the saviour of Canadian medicare while saying that if Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada came to power they would introduce "American-style" health care. Martin was happy to take credit for cutting taxes and eliminating the deficit during the 1990s when he was Minister of Finance, but he referred to tax cuts included in the Conservative Party platform as being "American-style tax cuts". Canadians who favour lower taxes or the private delivery of health care services or smaller governments or anything similar to what is found in the United States were called "un-Canadian" by Paul Martin.

It is therefore not surprising that a high percentage of Canadian youth think that the United States is evil. Nor is it surprising that this feeling is more ****ounced in Quebec where Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe said that he would rather live under the United Nations than the Stars and Stripes. The left wing Canadian political parties, aided by their supporters in the elite media don’t seem to be able to say anything positive about Canada without denigrating the United States in the process.

The poll results reflect that anti-Americanism will be solidly entrenched in future generations of Canadians. As well as listening to the propaganda espoused by their political leaders and the media, these kids have no experience with what constitutes real evil. They live in a country that much like pre-9/11 America, thinks that terrorist attacks are something that happens in other countries. And as the World War II veterans slowly die off, they have no conviction of the evil that the allies risked their lives to defeat.

With anti-Americanism playing such a prominent role in this past election campaign, it is no wonder that the United States was viewed in such a negative light.

Should we be surprised?

I went to college near the Canadian border and I saw and heard a lot of Canadian media over those 4 years. I was astonished at how negatively the US is portrayed in newscasts, entertainment, and some commercials.

I understand that many Canadians resent our power and wealth; and I'm sure that we've done some bad things to them over the years.

But young Canadians are fed a steady diet of hate-the-USA and, frankly, I'm surprised it was only 40% who think we're "evil".

On second thought, maybe that's explained by all the US media that Canadians consume every day (although that, too, could be considered a reason to think America is evil).

or 40% of Canadian teenagers think their allowance is too small....
or 40% of Canadian teenagers think Dr Evil should let his hair grow out...

How about a meaningful poll.

it still reflects the reason of why im moving out of Canada as soon as possible, this country is too anti-American for me. Its realy stupid when our government says everyone is tolerated and we are a multi cultural country, but that saying never applies to being american in this country.
I had 3 teachers in school this year who i believe described the states as evil, radical or tried to compare them to the nazis. I have had enough with this country :(

Well, being evil worked for the US while being "righteous" led Canada to become a second-tier power. If evil can get you to be the world's most powerful ountry, then go for it!

Not that I care, but you may be interested to know that we pollute less as a proportion of GDP than does the EU. In other words, even though we are the world's largest polluter, we're producing things that the rest of the world buys more cleanly than you do. In other words, shut the hell up.

It is indeed a little bit true. It's true in the sense that consumers all over the world have chosen to buy our products and view our media. It's also true in the sense that we have thousands of people and lots of materiel garrissoned in places that were incapable of policing themselves at one time or another. We didn't just wake up one day and decide to undertake a benign domination of the planet. Nor, pace the British, did we arrive at this situation in a fit of absence of mind.

One way or another, we dominate the world at the request of those we dominate. Before you scoff at that, think about it. Then thank us.

1. I mean the shirt is true - because the USA bombs this countries :(
2. Yes, i like your media and your games, and your cars are best looking all over the world! But:

Why the f*cking hell it is not possible that you have the same ecological laws as we have in EU or Germany (germany have one of the most strict ecological law system in the world)? You are so f*cking mighty and you polute the world with you fuel-eatin' cars and so on? That's not good. You have to be the archetype, because you are so mighty and 'good'. But instead you do bad things - and that hurts. I love america (the landscape is one of the world finest! - and the americans are very nice people) but do it better than now!

Again: we pollute less as a proportion of GDP than you do. Do you understand what that means? If you said that to me in German, I wouldn't understand it, so I'm not being condescending, I'm being serious. Anyway, here's what I mean:

Say the world needs a million tractors to harvest food. If all of those 1 million tractors were built in China, their manufacture would produce, say, a billion tons of CO2. If they were all built in America, their manufacture would produce, say, 300 million tons of CO2. But not all of those tractors could be buit in the EU. Nevertheless, the world needs all of those tractors. Is it therefore fair to compare the pollution created by America's manufacture of those tractors to the EU's manufacture of scooters, Porsches, and bureaucrats? No, it isn't. Some country is going to have to make them, and it might as well be the country that can do it most efficiently and cleanly: us.

That's why you have to compare pollution as a proportion of GDP among countries. And when you do, you see that America produces more for less pollution than all the countries that lecture us about being dirty.

Okay, i understand, very good example, indeed. But:

When you have to produce these tractors, why it is impossible (to you) to build tractors which need less fuel, for example? German Tractors (e.g.) uses leeeeeeeeeeeeess fuel than yours. That's what i am talking about: your 'american way of life' is to waste. Your country is the most biggest 'per-head-trash'-producers (i am taliking about the trash you made at your home!). Why your cars need around 15-25 litres per 100 Kilomteres? I know: it is cool to use a V8-Motor and your cars are even bigger than ours - but why it is not possible to buy a little bit smaller cars, with less fuel-need? i know that europeean 'over-the-top'-cars need aroudn 18litres, too. But the normal, european car needs 10 litres and less! Why your chemical industry porduce more harmful substances as ours (in %!)? Because we have more strict laws - and these laws were much better - even to you because you are one of the biggest countries in the world - if you produce only 15% less CO2 or somethin else, it would be great! Look at China! There are no ecological laws like we have - but because of their government there is no way to bring it on. But you are THE country in the world - and for you is it impossible? Sad.... very sad...

Why? Because we have to travel vast distances. The distance between me and New York is the distance between London and Tehran. Think about that. Anyway, compare our per capita fuel consumption with Canada's or Australia's. I bet they'd be rather similar. Also, our families are larger, so our cars have to haul more people and things. But mostly, we have big cars because we like big cars.

Which is fine, because most of the pollution in the air comes from electricity production, forest fires, and livestock flatulence, not trips to grandma's house.

As for trash: who cares? We have a lot of room in the ground. Plastic is no less biodegradable or more polluting than, say, crude oil. Landfill space isn't an issue in this country (except, perhaps, in the northeast and even there, it's not really a problem).

Could be the Boxer Rebellion, although I'm sure someone else will say. "Thats not what its called."

Whatever, they left off a few anyway. If we are gonna get credit I want all of it. What about Oglala Nation or Six Rivers. How did we get Hawaii, I don't remember? Outright theft, or another purchase. Anyway I want credit for all of it, even if it takes both sides of the shirt.

For purposes of this shirt, I bet the Republic of Texas would even let us list them as part of the glorious empire, since its just a joke and all.

Does buying Louisiana, Alaska, California and all the other parts of the square states we bought count? I think it should. Maybe list it as a hostile merger. Still ours now. "Nener nener nener!"

that shirt..

god.. who the hell made that shirt ?

I am trying to figure that out...

I know the Flying Tigers started in 1941 and their commander (re L. Chennault) was in Theater (Burma) around 1937 helping the Chinese.

The Boxer Rebellion, was not during a "6" year...

With that said...

In 1946 the U.S. managed a military truce was arranged in January 1946 between the Nationalists and Communists...brief as it was.

In 1926 several destroyers and light cruisers were dispatched from the Asiatic Fleet to help with instability along the Yangtze River. Afterwards they left, leaving gunboats to deal with anti-brigand patrols and commerce defense (some of you might Remember the U.S.S. Panay, which was sunk in 1937 by the Japanese. it was bulit in 1927 and later that year stationed on the Yangtze till its sinking).

Ok, never mind. I did a search for the T and found it. The China listing is for 1945-46. *snort*

The Korea-China is for 1950-53. (Yeah, right)

Man these guys suck. What about the Philippines? :D

*lol* Nice thread.

@German Cars:

I already told you that there are german/european Cars which need over 15 litres, that's for sure. But i already told you, too, that these cars are only for the better payed people are (these cars costs around 40.000 - 80.000€) - most europeans drive a normal car and which need around 10 litres and less. Please read what i post ;) i got one more for you:

Oh ****, it is in german.... okay, forget it ;)

I don't want to blame anyone, a only said what i am thinkinging about this topic. I like the USA and the american people - what it would be great, if you do somethings better! Thats all i want.

America is "evil" ?? hahaha, Teens are naughty in everywhere, specially when they know some "abuse" cases on TV.

Do you want to know Chinese people(specially youths) how to think America now?

In China, there is not anti-America propaganda to public on official media now. we don't think U.S.A. is Imperialism or "evil", though we both have some conflict in history. U.S.A. is a great nation, but not a perfect nation(there are not perfect nations in the world). American people are kindhearted, diligent, humour, fair, courteous(and patriotic), so we love Americans. Internal America is democratic, but international America is "America's interest is prior", all your force around the world are merely for "America's prior interest ". So think of America through this thread, most things become clear and simple.
