Do you think China has lived up to such reputation?
In yr opinion where does China stand in the overall standing list of national strength across the globe?

The Xinhua News Agency (http://chinanewswrap.com/2009/08/18/foreign-media-china-ranks-3rd-in-assessment-of-national-strength-of-g20-members/www.xinhuanet.com) has a headline news story reporting that the Korean media says that China has ranked 3rd in assessments of the overall national strength of G20 members.
”The South Korean newspaper ‘Chosun Ilbo’ reports that China currently ranks 1st in the three ’soft areas’ of political power, cultural power, and social capital power, and that it ranks 2nd in the world in terms of overall national power.”
“In addition to this, a research organization has stated that China’s cultural power is first in the world, based on the fact that the size of its exports of creative products is twice that of the United States. Consideration must be given, however, to the fact that this export amount contains a large number of low-value cultural products.”
“Looking at the Cold War era, when the world was divided between U.S. and Russian spheres of influence, China’s overall national power was 12th in the world. With the exception onf national defence power (ranked 2nd in the world), other indicators were all extremely low, such as national political capability (19th), ability to respond to macroeconomic changes (18th), political power (19th) and social capital power (17th). Russia, which previously possessed an enormous advantage in terms of science and technology power, has fallen to 14th place in this area.”
“Nations ranked in terms of overall national power from 3rd to 10th position are: Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Austria and Spain.”
“Of these countries, the majority possess greater hard power than soft power or a balance between the two. Only Japan possesses far less soft power (8th place) than it does hard power (3rd place). The difference between China’s hard power (2nd place) and soft power (7th place) is quite large. This shows that both nations possess weaknesses in their national power structure.”
“According to the report by the South Korean newspaper ‘Choson Ilbo’ on 15 August, this survey shows that in assessments of political, economic, social, culture and national defence power, South Korea is ranked 13th in the world in terms of overall national power.”
“On the eve of South Korea’s National Liberation Day, the ‘Korean Peninsula Advanced Finance Group’ (韩半岛先进化财团) made public the results of this joint analysis of the overall strength of different nations that it conducted with ‘Choson Ilbo’, placing the United States in first place and China in second place. The results of the research also show that overall, South Korea’s soft power (12th place) is slightly poorer than its hard power (9th place).”
Title of original news story in Chinese: “G20综合国力评估,中国排名世界第三 (http://news.xinhuanet.com/world/2009-08/18/content_11901880.htm)”

I don't know why China, the Chinese and the Chinese media are so obsessed with rankings.
From my point of view, of all the G20 nations, only two are non-democratic (China nd Saudi Arabia)
Is being number one an ultimate goal of China for the sake of it? I for one don't really care for Germany and her place in the world as long as we have good governance, rule of law and prosperity, things the Han Chinese and their oppressed minorities don't have. Or take Luxemburg and Norway. These countries are way better off then anything China can achieve with being number 1 without having any soft or hard power in the world.

Hmm I wonder who makes up all these rankings. Russia even after the fall of the USSR still innovates in many areas - military, the aerospace industry, makes contributions to science. Some simple keeping up with current events will make you well aware of this.
China is big, and has a big economy which it built by providing limitless cheap labor. Perhaps the only developed country in the world where the majority of the population is willing to work for a dollar-a-day, roughly speaking.
How China is leading in terms of science and technology is beyond all reason, since we all know quite well China plays catchup by reverse engineering, and simply replicating the innovations of other nations? which is how it was able to place itself among the leading nations in the first place.

NOt only China, but also many many other countries and the rest of the world's people are actually quite concerned with their position in the world!
Haven't we seen enough of these UN reports or media stories of TOP 10 or Top 100 or Top 500 or Top whatsoever?
We human beings cannot cleanze such standinglist-obsession as long as there is competition btw countries and peoles, can we?!

You'd want to be careful about that sort of thinking, being number one looks cool and all, but sitting up on that pedastel just makes you a juicier target, and a challenge to knock off....for all sorts of groups/nations ect.
everytime someting goes wrong, the number one nation on Earth, either get's blamed/asked to bail someone out or intervene....and then they get critizied for whatever they do.:roll:

things the Han Chinese and their oppressed minorities don't have..
I dont understand why you say this, my hometown is in Xinjiang, in the northwest part of China and where lives more than 40 minority groups;
Being a minortity member in China, means:
1, you could go to college much much easier than Han people, For Han people you need 470 scores (in year of 2002) in the College Entrance Exams to go into good college, if you are a Uyghuer, you just need 200 to 300; Uyghurs could enjoy the lowest college entrance score, but not Huei.
2, you can take a knife with you, Chinese laws do not allow people to take knives longer than 15cm, but Uyghurs and other minority group are exeption, this is to respect their "tradition"
3, if you have a quarrel or a fight with Han people on the street, then usually that Han people will be punished by the police but not the minority people, the police doing this because of "harmonious society" policy; so when i was a kid my father told me dont ever have any problems with Uyghurs, dont fight with them, otherwise i would have a big problem;
4, being a minority member, you can have 2-3 children and even more, as a Han people, you are only allowed to have one baby, otherwise you have to pay for a lot of money for your second child as a punishment; take Rebeya as example, the so-called mother of Uyghur, and she really deserves this title, since she give birth to 11 children; Uyghurs population in 1950 are 3 millions, and now it is 9 millions.
you may say what i said here are all bullsh!t and propaganda, but this is what exactly happened in China, and many Han people changed their nationality to be a minority group, to enjoy the convienient/better educational polocy for their children;
again, if you really care about how we Chinese Han people oppressed the minorities, then you can go to China, go to Xinjiang, Tibet to collect the hard evidence for the oppression, if you dont care at all, then i suggest you dont use the word OPPRESS.

that really matter? No 1 or 2. China at its late Qing time was No1 for several decades and got badly beaten up for the same period. The rankings is really nothing in the same world.

It's about as illegal as prostitution in Thailand, so yes, technically it's supposed to be, but hardly enforced, if not at all.

Even if they put China on the TOP 10 list, I wudn't be too surprized!:)
Such lists are pretty wishy-washy stuff, subject to lots of wishful thinkings by the ideologies of the chart compilers!
