Im having a bit of a problem with my CD drive. It wont read the disks. I put a disk in and nothin happens. The disk doenst show up under my computer, and it doesnt automatically start up. Maybe i need to turn auto run on or something. I went out of town this weekend and it worked fine before i left. The computer was turned on all weekend by mistake. I checked all the connections, and even tried troubleshooting the driver. Pleas help me with any info you can. Thanks.

Stick your finger in the CPU fan and see if it's still running.
Seriously, i don't know what's wrong with your CD drive. It could be a number of things from faulty IDE, faulty CD drive, cut on your IDE cable to software issues.

Run new firmware, take the cd-rom to a repairshop.

Wouldn't happen to be a Samsung or Toshiba (usually come preinstalled with HP's) cdrom drive would it? I know those bastards had some sort of over heating issues and if they stayed on to long the drive would go to ****. If this is what you are experiencing chances are you'll have to buy another cd-rom, but hell they are only 19.99-30.00 now a days. So unless you are a tight-wad, I'd just get another one.

take the cd-rom to a repairshop.
And spend 20-30 bucks. Just buy another one.

I had the same problem with my old computer about a year ago.
I called the company and they replaced the drive.

Sacrifice an order of crispy chicken to the computer demons. If that doesn't work try sacrificing some beers to them.

Jack is right! Lite-on is the least expensive and most reliable drives out there.

The computer is a dell, and i got it early 2003 i think. So its not real old. Ill try some of those things. Ill probably just end up gettin a new one.

your motherboard may be fried. On my old CPU, when CD drive wouldnt work, it turned out the mother board was fried.
