View Full Version : France hits new peak for births

THE number of births in France is on the increase and hit 828,400 in 2008 – up 1.2% from 2007.

National statistics body Insee said there had been 796,000 infants born in metropolitan France and 32,400 Outre-Mer (in the overseas territories).

Births have now matched the peak seen in 2006 – which was the highest rate since 1981.

The secretary of state for the family, Nadine Morano, welcomed the figures saying they showed French people were thinking of the future in spite of the credit crunch.

Insee was updating provisional figures released in January that indicated the number of births was 834,000.

It said then that mothers had a fertility rate of 2.02 children and although this figure has not yet been updated it makes France the champion of Europe for births, matched only by Ireland. The average fertility rate across the European Union is 1.5 children per woman.

Iceland released figures last week showing its birth rate had increased by 3.5% – although that only amounted to 275 actual births in a country of 320,000 people. There the fertility rate has hit 2.14 – against 1.92 for the UK.

And I can vouch for the article, I see babies absolutely everywhere in my relatives, its pretty impressive..

According to statistics I read in Der Spiegel, France is going to catch up with Germany populationwise in 2050.
It was Eurostat who predicted that both countries will have something between 70 and 75 Million citizens each, meaning a decline of roughly 10 Millions for germany and a growth of round abount the same number for France.

I read that too. It's going to be odd - France hasn't been the largest-populated nation of Western Europe since the days of Napoleon.

Jup, but despite all the attention (and often fearmongering) this topic gets - to those working in this field of science, it doesn´t come as a surprise...

As far as Germany is concerned, we have had a "prolonged" Baby Boom, throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Germany´s birth rate is pretty stable since the 1970s, so it is not as if people have decided to stop having children...

There will be balance again, sooner or later and other countries will be hit by the same phenomenon in a much harder fashion than us Euros.

I´m not worried.

Predicting populations can always be a tricky business. Especially 40 years down the line. Either case, I'm happy to see that France is experiencing a resurgence in its birthrate. Who knows, maybe Germans will be inspired. :-D

It seems to me like every single Muslim has some sort of variation of Mohamed as part of their name. It must be more common than John is in the English language.

This is a well known phenomena whenever the economy is doing badly, there's a recession, war or some other disaster. It usually ends up in a babyboom.

It's strange how people make less children when they are doing well and feel safe. But then start having kids when their future looks uncertain. Must be some biological program.

Maybe people start realizing what's more important in their lives, instead of taking things for granted. Also, if your career isn't doing to well due to the economy, it makes sense that one would take solace in family. Just my 2 cents.

Look at the methodology: these stats are based on parent's declarations on this website. It's very "un-scientific" to say the least.

It has sense , in Bosnia during the war far more children have been born than today in peace.

It is not that unusual. Who produces more babies than people in the third world? There, kids are a means to make sure that you´ve got someone to take care of you when you are old.

100 years ago, it wasn´t that much different in Europe.

Today we´ve got insurance and stuff... we are capable of doing more planning and we will make kids when we´ve got the time to squeeze them into our busy schedule.
We also don´t have to make 4 or 5 kids just in case that ony half of them will make it into adulthood and we do have more and more reliable means of birth control.

But there is something another as well. There's theory that the most important component of life is our genotype which permanently compete with billions of others, so during every tensions, threats wars people started to make *** much more frequently without awareness of its real reasons which is to multiple genotype as many times as possible.

About the causes of the french high birthrate , there are 3 main factors according to Ined experts:

- Free nursery school for every 3 years old children (and cheap nurseries for younger).
- Children born out of wedlock are welcomed too in the french society (52% of total births)
- More and more pregnancies after 40 ; the birthrate didn't decline these last 30 years , babies just come later.

http://www.ined.fr/fichier/t_publication/1452/publi_pdf1_454.pdf

I would add its easy in France for working women to make babies , they are still paid ,won't lost her job and generally don't have to choose between a baby and a career.
