KABUL, July 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Afghan police have uncovered a private jail run by foreign nationals in the center of the capitalcity Kabul, a local radio reported Wednesday.

"Police raided a house in Karta-e-Parwan area on Monday and arrested six foreigners and their local interpreter," Radio Kalid said.

It was the first time that such incident was reported in the Afghan capital as the government is making great efforts to check lawlessness and abolish all the private detention centers run by local warlords in the post-war country.

The radio gave no more details, but it was said that five civilians who had been illegally held at the unlawful prison were set free.

Police neither rejected nor confirmed the episode and officials also declined to comment on the report. Enditem

Three Americans Arrested In Afghan Capital
One Reportedly Posed As U.S. Government Or Military Employee

POSTED: 10:45 am EDT July 7, 2004
KABUL, Afghanistan -- Afghan police have arrested three Americans in Kabul, including one who was reportedly posing as a U.S. government or military employee.

U.S. and Afghan officials aren't saying much about the case.

A spokesman for international peacekeepers said only that he's "aware" of Afghan media reports that police also discovered an illegal jail allegedly run by the Americans, as well as guns and ammunition.

The U.S. Embassy identified one of the men as Jonathan Idema. But the military is distancing itself from him in a statement that said the man "does not represent the American government and we do not employ him."

He's believed to be a former Green Beret who supplied tapes of an alleged al-Qaida training camp to western TV networks in the wake of the war against the Taliban in late 2001.
