President Bush had to duck for cover as journalist shouted insults

BAGHDAD - An Iraqi journalist jailed after hurling his shoes at former President George W. Bushhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32607001/ns/world_news-conflict_in_iraq/?GT1=43001#) will be released next month after his sentence was reduced for good behavior, his lawyer said Saturday.
Muntadhar al-Zeidi's act during Bush's last visit to Iraq as president turned the 30-year-old reporter into a folk hero across the Arab world amid anger over the 2003 invasion.
He has been in custody since the Dec. 14 outburst, which occurred as Bush was holding a joint news conference with Prime Minister Nouri al-Malikihttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32607001/ns/world_news-conflict_in_iraq/?GT1=43001#).

He was initially sentenced to three years after pleading not guilty to assaulting a foreign leader, then the court reduced it to one year because the journalist had no prior criminal history.
Defense attorney Karim al-Shujairi said al-Zeidi will now be released on Sept. 14, three months early.
"We have been informed officially about the court decision," al-Shujairi told The Associated Presshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32607001/ns/world_news-conflict_in_iraq/?GT1=43001#) in a telephone interview. "His release will be a victory for the free and honorable Iraqi media."
Judicial spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar said he had no immediate information about the release.
National hero
The bizarre act of defiance transformed the obscure reporter from a minor TV station into a national hero to many Iraqis fed up with the nearly six-year U.S. presence here.
The case also drew worldwide attention and became a rallying cry throughout the Muslim world for critics who resent the U.S. invasion and occupation.

Thousands demonstrated for al-Zeidi's release and hailed his gesture, which came in the waning days of the Bush administration. The incident also embarrassed al-Maliki, who was standing next to Bush at the time.
Neither leader was injured, but Bush was forced to duck for cover as the journalist shouted in Arabic: "This is your farewell kiss, you dog! This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

Theres a seperate charge for Assault on Foreign Leaders as opposed to normal people? Interesting

Seriously though, 3 years is harsh, yes its was the President, but it would have at worst left a nasty bruise or cut, twas hardly a deadly weapon, for a first offence in the Uk he'd have been cautioned or something at worst.
Probably just chucked out and told where to go

Really? Jeez, let me know next time Cabt. Sec. for Justice Kenny MacKaskill of Scotland shows up for a press conference in the UK, I have a pair of size 12 waffle stompers that I can hurl pretty well. Then I could "be cautioned" and catch the next flight back to the USA.

Yeah, its in the news almost every day and on all those Police Action Camera videos. People caught breaking into places or brawling and whatnot get "released and cautioned" or spend a night in the cells and then released without charge. Its worth with the youth... we really need to crack down on punishments tbh. Its only with serious repeat offences we start handing out real punishments

Who can say? We'll probably never know. But I hope he got cornholed by a whole cellblock of horny Iraqi inmates.

If any thing, it demonstrated that President Bush can still move. As comical as it was, I too, think 3 years is a bit much. I really don't know the full extent of the case, reason for sentencing, etc. If I did, then I may say more time or less time or it was just right.

I doubt it. If the Iraqi prison population is as America-Friendly as I think it is, he's probably been treated like a celebrity.

If I threw a shoe at Obama, or Bush for the matter. How long do you think I would serve? Probly a little longer than this guy.

Why would you serve any longer. I'm shocked it was so long tbh. It was a bloody shoe. It wouldnt have hurt seriously, its like people who throw eggs at prescott. They should be given a stern word and and booted out. Its not like he tried to shoot him or anything is it

I think if you threw a shoe at Obama, you would likely get shot by the Secret Service, or at the minimum have a broken arm where they wrestled you to the ground.

Of course you would, especially in the US or any western country. What does that tell you about the people of Iraq and where their sympathies lie and how much they really like America? This guy got off easy because while the government was not particularly amused, they could see where he was coming from.

In the UK, that won't happen.

To US Standards, maybe it's understandable, but in the UK what happened to him was ridiculous.

Would have simply been thrown out in the UK

OR, they're making the best of a precarious situation by attempting to appeal to both sides.

All sides more than both. The guy wasn't particulalry radical, He threw a shoe, not a grenade. He's just an angry ordinary Iraqi. There are a lot of those from all walks.
