They got 27.4 % in Thuringia, 24.5 in Saarland and 20.6 in Saxony.
I kinda expected them to get a lot of votes but not THAT many.
Merkel victory in doubt after left-wing surge in regional elections

Um, in my opinion there did not happen anything extraordinary. I believe the drastic surge in the Saarland can mostly be attributed to Oskar Lafontaines switch to the Leftists, their only significant political avatar and the man many Saarlanders follow like the flock their sheperd.
In Thuringia the CDU lost sharply for known reasons - but the Left actually gained the least votes of ALL parties from that loss. And in Saxony they actually LOST a significant vote share, 3 percent.
So I absolutely do not understand why the press is calling bloody murder on this election.

"Die Linke" which is the successor of the PDS.

We're talking SED (http://www.hdg.de/lemo/objekte/pict/Nachkriegsjahre_plakatKarlMarxSED/index.jpg)/PDS/Linke. Left left.

yesterday i watched maybrit illner on zdf, with all this politicians talking about the possibility of red-red in state governments, but refusing red-red for the central government for international politics...
i really hope that the next german government will be black-yellow, but i think there will be another black-red...

What a damn shame.
The same people that say that was no such thing as the "shoot on sight" order in the DDR.
When will my homeland ever learn...

there will always be someone who votes this parties, but i think that many spd voters voted for die linke, as protest against the black-red government, which seems to be a little bit static (but it's a carachteristic of such governments, take a look at the austrian one)...

I also think the grand coalition will continue. Or what about Jamaica?
In my state NRW for example the greens are still very strong, but not the Linke.
And NRW is more representative for Germany than Saarland, Thuringia etc.
Kommunalwahlen NRW
CDU 38,6
SPD 29,4
Die Grünen 12,0
FDP 9,2
Die Linke 4,4
It's just Kommunal, but the greens still outnumber the Linke.
After yesterday everything seems possible for the Bundestag, even Jamaica.

as the cdu continues to hold the overall majority of the voters, the jamaica seems to be a serious possibility, but at then end much will depend on the number of voters which will take part in the election (as at least in the last elections it was low)...

Gains and losses (SEATS in Parliament) / state elections:
Thüringen: CDU 30 - 15
Linke 27 - 1
SPD 18 + 3
Grüne 6 + 6
FDP 7 + 7
As we see, CDU looses big, FDP and Greens are main winners.
Sachsen: CDU 58 + 3
Linke 29 - 2
SPD 14 + 1
Grüne 9 + 3
FDP 14 + 7
NDP 8 - 4
As we see, FDP gained most again. Good to see the far right and far left loose.
Saarland: CDU 19 - 8
SPD 13 - 5
Grüne 3 - no changes
FDP 5 + 2
Linke 0 + 11
Saarland can only be considered a main victory for the far left and Lafontaine ... hope that he screws in the government as all Linke politicians do when having real power.
