Three Dead at New Mexico Ranch of ABC's Donaldson
LOS ANGELES (*******) - Veteran ABC News commentator Sam Donaldson said three people were apparently murdered on his New Mexico ranch over the July 4 weekend while he and his wife were out of town.
Donaldson, 70, said in a statement that he and his wife, Jan, were "shocked by the apparent triple homicide that took place on our ranch in Hondo, New Mexico sometime over the 4th of July weekend while we were in Santa Fe."
"We understand the investigation is continuing and we have been asked by authorities not to comment further at this time," the statement said.
Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Sullivan said Donaldson and his wife "are not considered suspects and have been very cooperative."
Sullivan said Donaldson called deputies at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday after discovering "an apparent crime scene" at his ranch foreman's home when he returned from Santa Fe.
The bodies of a man and two women were discovered in a shallow grave, Sullivan said. The victims' names were being withheld until their families are notified, Sullivan said.
According to the ABC News Web site, Donaldson's father bought the farmland in 1910, and the former White House correspondent added to the acreage.
Known for his no-holds-barred style during his coverage of presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan (news - web sites), Donaldson now works as a political commentator for ABC.
