The US Olympic Committee (USOC) on Wednesday joined the Chicago 2016 bid committee in extending its gratitude and congratulations to the International Olympic Committee Evaluation Commission (IOCEC) for its assessment report.
"The USOC is pleased that the Evaluation Commission has confirmed Chicago's readiness to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as its thorough planning and understanding of what is required to deliver a spectacular experience for the world's top athletes," the USOC said in a statement.
"The USOC applauds Chicago 2016 and the City of Chicago for creating one of the strongest bids the United States has ever put forward," the statement added.
With a long-term vision that creates a sporting and cultural celebration in the heart of the city, Chicago truly puts the athletes first and leaves a sustainable legacy for Chicago, for America and for the worldwide Olympic Movement, said the statement.
"We are particularly pleased that the Commission chose to note that 'there has been significant involvement of the USOC and athletes in the planning of the project and its legacy aims,' which not only reflects the strong partnership between the USOC and Chicago 2016, but also our commitment to the long-term interests of the Olympic Movement," the statement noted.
The USOC reaffirmed its support for Chicago's bid, saying it has worked closely with the Chicago team to address the issues raised in the report.
"From the early stages of the USOC' s domestic bid process, we have been absolutely determined to put forward a candidature which both reflects the current needs and requirements of the IOC, but also responds to the long-term interests of the Olympic Movement.
"We know there is more to do, and collaboratively, we will work with Chicago 2016 and the City of Chicago to support delivering the strongest possible bid which listens to and learns from the Commission's invaluable feedback," the statement stated.

The City of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, Mayor could use some infrastructure upgrades, and if having the Olympics in the City of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, Mayor enables funding for such upgrades, I think it would be great for the City of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, Mayor to get the Olympics.

Having said that, though, if I still lived there I'd take a couple weeks' vacation from the City of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, Mayor when the Olympics actually came to town. The Olympics get more massive and unwieldy every year. Unless you're a totalitarian state that can shut down normal life for the purposes of having the Olympics run smoothly, it's going to cause problems for a city.

If it does come to Chicago... which I hope it does... I'll plan on taking those two weeks off.

Traffic and public transportation in and around the city is crowded as it is... add a bunch of tourists (which there's already plenty of) and it'll bring the daily commute to a standstill.

Lately though, there's been a growing dissent for the bid. People think it'll cost too much and the city, which is really in a budget crunch, doesn't have the funds to build the necessary facilities. This is Mayor Daley's baby... his last big "contribution" to the city... I'm sure he'll be pulling in every last favor to see this happen.

or a party that we have to pay for years to come....

I think it will bring interest in the city... more empty real estate bought up, and global recognition... ( we're already have the planets busiest airport?) but I hope it brings the financial market's willingness to borrow for new projects within and near the city...

I hope this would force the financing and building of the "Spire"...

The citizens of Athens don't seem to have benefited much that I can see, I was there during the summer and the facilities just lie empty.

Really? Last December in Munich I saw that the whole area of the 1972 games was still used. For example, the Olympic swimming pool is open for the public and in the near-by gymnastics hall were preperations for an up-coming rock concert. The tower was also open and housed some kind of rotating restaurant.

Shuimo, what's the situation in Bejing? Are the former Olympic sport facilities open for the public?

I wasn't talking about Munich.

I know the facilities in Berlin are still being used, I have swum in the pool and been to the Olympic stadium but not all places benefit. There has to be a clear plan in place for after the games to make it work and in Athens, it hasn't worked.
