View Full Version : M4 paintjobs?

So I'm looking to give my M4, an actual one not airsoft, a paintjob. I'm not liking the complete black look. I have absolutely no knowledge on how to do this, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I thought about spraypaint, but not so sure that's a good idea though.
Thanks for your help.

Krylon is the popular choice, it's cheap, spray it on and when it wears, reapply as needed. I tried it on a pellet gun, but haven't got up the balls to spray my AR yet. Try what ever your going to do on something first, say cardboard, get it right & then hit up your rifle.
I think these are some of the best looking spray jobs I've ever seen. Tan base coat, cover with foliage/ plant's, mist with brown in areas. Remember mist the details, multiple light coats instead of direct heavy coats that will be runny and gloppy.

+100 on that. Check out his creations in the RS thread. Krylon fusion camo line is great along with Rustoleums line. A tan base coat is great as noted below then apply darker brown or green depending on where you'll be using your boomstick or to get the "look" you want. If you want to spend more there's the Duracoat. Also check AR15.com or M4carbine.net for some great paint ideas (I love worn, beaten painted rifles-they have so much character.)

I usually don't go for the camo paint job, since I paint and re-paint my rifle at least once a year due to heavy useage and the paint usually wear off..YES! even with Duracoat.
I like Duracoat because it is easy to apply and it is ver durable and it apply with a thin film. I have an AK74 coated with duracoat. this AK74 seen a lot of 5.45 ammo through it and I often shoot and leave it in my safe. up until now, none of the corrosive 5.45 have put a dent in my finish. but make sure you cover all metal surface witht he duracoat if you plan to do what I do with my AK....
Here is my LMT MRP painted with duracoat in Vltor flat dark earth......

Chen's right...paint will come off sooner or later from use. I never used Duracoat because I was lazy, and wanted the process to be reversible if I screwed up. Krylon's easy to use, and it's pretty much reversible if you screw up.
Used to be something like this:
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/2584/side1k.jpg
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9709/sideangle2.jpg
But then after a few months of use and cleaning solvents, I took it off and went back to black.
From my experience, a fancy paint job looks nice, but it doesn't make that much of a difference on how the gun's being used. Any color lighter than black helps with concealment, and the gun's not as hot under the sun after a few hours. My current paint job is really plain and straight to the point (10 minute paint job) since I know the paint will start coming off sooner or later with hard use.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/4172/sideangle.jpg
There is no real "right" or "wrong way" when it comes to paint jobs. It's mostly a trial and error experience. If you're not feeling comfortable painting it from the get go, it doesn't hurt to practice on something else you have laying around.

I used Brown and the Tan camo krylon on the furniture. The krylon wears pretty quick, but it adds some character. Just free hand it and giver. I seen some guys used the laundry bag pattern. I just made a couple of big lines.

Yep, battery life is crap. I have lots of N-type batteries at hand for now though. If/when I'm to upgrade optics, I'm going with an Aimpoint for that reason. So far, it's holding up pretty well. The gun's been dropped plenty of times (not directly on the optic, or it would probably shatter already) and been completely soaked/rained on a few times in massive rain storms. I'm waiting on it to 'crap' out so I can justify buying a new optic.

It's all personal preference. The carbine's a tool. Tools get worn with use over time. That said, like I said earlier, Krylon paint jobs are reversible.

Damn bro, I'm not that good. It's really not that hard, mostly procedural and preparation stuff.
For starters, always spray in thin layers. I usually start with the lightest color first, then gradually add on the darker colors.

Easy as hell.
I give one full coat of tan as the base (I live in Southern California). Hold plastic fern thing (craft store) an inch or two from the item, spray green/other colors over. BAM.
I've painted dozens of guns this way. Super easy, works friggin' great, and you always get compliments.
I've used the cheapest spraypaint all the way up to Bowflage. They all seem about the same. They all wear off in about the same time.

Nice job, Taco!
My paint job looks somewhat half-assed, but I don't really care so much, as I know it will start chipping the first or second sue of the rifle. Then I just give it another quick blast with the spray paint. I use a combo of olive drab and dark green, to blend with western Oregon's deep forests.

Whatever you use for paint, take the time to do a thorough prep job. It doesn't matter what you're painting, the prep time makes or breaks the paint job. Degrease the hell out of it, tape off what you don't want to spray, wear surgical gloves, avoid fingerprints etc. Light misting coats of paint, lots of drying time in between, patience....

As what Taco said, I also used a base coat of tan and then applied brown stripes. Another tip on spraypainting. When you start spraying, do not start it on the item, start it away then on the item and continue off it. If that makes any sense.

I used Brownells OD Guncote on my Shotty, applied and naked in the oven while the missarse was out(stinks like crap).
Then I refinished my can, I used wire wool to get the old paint off(as it didn't take a beating too well) soaked in acetone, then applied Brownells black and it looks sweet. The finish is thick, tough, and I love it.
The next project is to finish a new stock for my Savage Mark II FV (http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/images/Stocks/MTR/MTR_Stock5.jpg), going to bed the action, stipple the pistol grip and foregrip and then possibly give it a camo paint job.

Try suspending the gun from the ceiling of your garage or other well ventilated place, so you can work your way more evenly around the firearm.

Good start with the MP5. Color choice is important. Using Krylon OD and their dark brown only is one of the worse combos to use, as they're both too dark.
If you want more ****ounced stenciling, spray a little closer when spraying over the stencil (or leaves). But remember, when applying that single base coat/color, don't spray too close, always hold it further away and layer it on.

My early experiments just like BJ, used Tamiya hobby paints. As the members have said-lightly layer the paint on, don't cake it at once, take time between light coats and have fun with it. Hope all this helps.

Better on the second one. You want good contrast with a pattern like that. The pattern itself should break up the outline... if you get what I'm saying. Otherwise, it appears as if it's still one solid color.

2x.
BJ, the paint job on that mossberg turned out nicely. If you want more contrast, you could add a little darker color. Once the paint job starts wearing, it almost kind of adds another form of pattern/camo on there, since the black starts showing up at the worn areas. So in that regard, another 'color' is introduced.

@ BJ: just to add on what K1-1 said, you can lightly dust your shotgun with brown to darken it a bit or tone down the overall color. Or even add on some brown in some areas for a little more contrast.

Canīt say much about painting M4īs but applying Duracoat is pretty easy. Did the
following paintjob to my carry gun. The most tricky part about duracoating is the preparation. You got to degrease it properly and roughen up the parts that you want to coat. Takes some time but you get better results. I am happy with the results and the duracoat did not wear that much at all. Would do it again anytime ;)

The Krylon i used on my AK Burned into a nasty brown color last time i took it out.The only reason I don't use it is because it doesn't hold up to mild cleaning solvents. I know some guys say they do because it's cheap and if you don't like it you can just clean it off and start over, but to me that's too much work. I like to do it once and call it good for a few years. The other good thing is that I don't worry at all about rust on the outside of my barrel, I never have to oil it. Even parkerized barrels rust.

I can definitely tell the difference. Especially compared to my m4, with the cheaper paint that tends to chip/burn off more and more each time I shoot it.
