Hi guys,

I am working on an illustration and I would like to do it as accurately as possible. That's why I am asking this (and sorry if it sound stupid, I am no military expert, that's why I come here to seek your advices) :
In Afghanistan, British soldiers on patrol. Can we find soldiers on foot walking in a road, with 1 or 2 vehicle in support? If yes, what type of vehicles ? The MWMIK Jackal? An other vehicule? What would be the number of soldiers? What would be their formation? (vehicule in the middle, in the back, ...)

Thank you in advance for your precious help.

ok then :)

I just wanted to avoid a situation where I make an illustration with soldiers on foot and a Jackal or 2 and get negative comments because that is just impossible or look stupid.

But if it all depend, then I understand that the situation is possible, and therefore will not look totally wrong.

thank you

Ok, ok. Basically your normal patrol will have 10 people in it. 7 of which will be carrying the squad radio. 2 people will carry AK47 so as to "blend in" and they may sometimes even black up. The commanding officer will normally be seen with a cane and a shotgun of the "I hunt deer" variety. Everyone else will be hanging off of the vehicles which can be anything they want really. Some might even mix up desert DPM with other camos because this is cool. Everyone else can carry whatever weapon that they can find in the armoury.

Whenever they come into contact with the enemy the SOP is to disperse and fight their own battles, I think this would look good if you were going for an "action shot" so to speak. I'm sure others can help out with other info and maybe even correct some of mine, as I'm pretty rusty.

An umbrella is an acceptable alternative to the cane and also doubles up as a form of ID as Ruperts often forget the password and would otherwise be shot by nervous sentries mistaking them for Jerry (or Terry these days)

Or the commanding officer will be on a white horse on a hill top, with a Brass Spyglass Telescope with different colour flags for the troops to advance on segways.

Seriously dude, there are a shedload of pics out on the net and indeed on here. Sift through a few and you'll get a feel for a British unit. Embrace the fact that dress regs etc. leave British units looking rather individual and ad hoc. Surely great stuff for an artist to get into.

He means foot patrols that actually go a tad more "out there" than the KAF perimeter.

Well, he can still give them mudguards, just make the beret a fetching shade of Lovat Green. :)

Nah if he cant stretch to RAF Reg, the next best would be Khaki berets with a lion holding a flag on a rose for the capbadge...
