UK's N-sub visit to Gibraltar irks Spain (http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1087373571752&p=1012571727159)

Spain yesterday issued a strongly-worded protest against British plans to send the HMS Tireless, a nuclear submarine, to Gibraltar in time for the 300th anniversary of the British assault on the rock.
The Spanish government, which has twice asked London to cancel the Tireless visit, said it was "deeply upset" by Britain's lack of sensitivity to Spanish public opinion. Leslie Crawford, Madrid

GIBRALTAR, GIBRALTAR: The US Los-Angeles class nuclear submarine SSN-753 "Albany" lies moored in a berth in the port of Gibraltar 01 July 2004.
Hmmm ... So this has something to do with Zapatero not liking the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht or that HMS Tireless was moored at Gibraltar for almost a year in 2000-2001 after its nuclear reactor broke down?

Spain needs to shut up and let the Brits party. :D

He219,
I believe the main reason was that the Tireless was moored for over a 1yr with a fracture in its engine. Of course, we do not like the 1713 treaty, and it is also a reason.
Durandal,
Surgically remove your head from your ass, you are breathing too much methane (everyone knows that the brits don`t know how to party ;) ).

Tireless was probably not the boat I'd send, if anything just to assure people that we werent trying to contaminate them. Should that have been the reason for the Spanish objection, then I think we should have agreed to their request - we have other ships should we need to wave the flag. However, if was because it is a British naval warship, then respectfully no. To have agreed in that case would give the locals the impression that yet again perfidious albion was going to sell its loyal subjects down the river.

I have to admit, my most favorite after hours parties back in 92-93 were in Spain for certain. Nothing but post-trip techno and sexy women...
Those were the days.

Just a to points about Gibraltar.
1)After Utrecht treaty they aren't able to have territorial waters around the rock.
2)The airport is in Spanish territory it was made during Spanish civil war .

So basically this 300th anniversary is another opportunity for the Spanish to whine about Gibraltar, doesn't sound like it's anything to do with the sub.

no whine man. brits can put the rock right up their a**es.
gibraltarians are not Spanish neither British, in fact they dont speak correctly any of those languages.
Brits teachers call gibraltarians children "ation kids", you know why? for them a shoe in english is a "zapatation" (zapato is the Spanish word for shoe) and so on... imagine how much do we Spanish people love and admire those living in the rock.
besides, strategic importance of gib is no longer considered since the mega USA-Spain air-naval base of Rota control and seal the Strait far more efficiently.

IMHO as an ordinary Spanish citizen, thats it!
but it wold be great the Spanish government would;
- precint the border so any gibraltarian willing to enjoy his brand new chalet should take a ferry to Tanger (Morocco) then to Algeciras (Spain) as they had to do 15 years ago
- avoid smuggling, drug dealing and money whitening from the UK side of the border

I totally agree that criminal activity has to investigated and dealt with - a criminal is criminal be he Spanish, British, Gibraltan whoever. We do not wish to be a source of misery for the Spanish or anyone else or get a reputation for being some sort of haven for criminals.. To do this we need co-operation with Spanish authorities, and the co-operation has to be on the basis that it is a common problem to which the politics of the Spanish-Gibraltar issue are put aside - if not only the criminals will benefit. What does closing the border achieve ? Who is your arguement with ? The British or the people of Gibraltar ? If you wish to encourage the Gibraltans to join Spain as an expression of freewill rather than as the transfer of voicelss peasants between two fuedal powers then keep the border open and show them the benefits of joining Spain. At least create a situation where neither side will loose face.

if they join Spain theyll lose the benefit of cheaper properties and criminal business. theyre not interested in that p-) . Surrounding Spanish cities do not benefit the fact of keeping the border open the same as their British neighbours. so my decision would be, lets isolate the rock.

So in effect this is coercion.

I am total agreement with you that criminal activites must be dealt with. Its no good if the Gibraltan authorities allow these activiities to the detriment of their Spanish neighbours. However, it is simply not possible to give away a peice of land from under the feet of its inhabitants against their wishes. Its like Ceuta and Melilla - to hand them over against their wishes would be an infringement of their rights.

i always thought the spannish claim over Gib like the Irish claim over Northern Ireland was illegal and has been since they joined the EEC as under EEC law claims on soverign territory of othe member states is illegal. So lets get a lawyer to take them both to court kick them out of the EU and make them repay all the grants they've stolen and ban the spanish and Irish from fishing in EU waters.
