From the article:
"While I certainly agree that the AR-15 is one of the best rifles of its type in existence, it's still a 50-year old design. In reality, it's only a mere 3 years younger than the M14 it replaced.
It would be nice if some of the major US firearms companies would develop a modern design to compete with it, instead of pumping out knockoffs. Sure, it would take hard work, talented engineers and a layout of cash, but the results would be worth the effort. "
^ While I love ARs, the above pretty much sums up my feelings. I feel that especially in the US, there is a lack of imagination and innovation, and it's been that way for a few decades.

so you're gonna get an ACR when it hits shelves? doesn't get more American innovation than that.

Whats wrong with piston ARs?
From my understanding Direct Impingement is far from ideal when taking service life and reliability/maintenance into account.
I'm working on assembling my AR and have yet to chose the upper portion but the CMMG M4 LEP II is what I'm currently set on which is a piston based system that retains almost all of the customization features of a standard AR with the exception of the forend rail assemblies that are not compatible. However CMMG and Midwest Industries both manufacture a compatible rail platform which work with the K7 piston system.

I know of a Remmington mil ACR that just got auctioned off for the WWP, i was tempted to post a link on here.

If prices were the same, I'd probably opt for the piston AR. I'm just not willing to shell out the extra $$$$ for one.

what next??
Kalashnikov making AR too?? rofl
it's funny too see AR15/M16 competitors making AR style carbines instead of improving their own products :|

I'm kind of surprised. SIG jumped on the 1911 bandwagon a few years ago, and now this...

Bloody right mate! I live in California and I'm still gonna find a way to get my hands on one.

I can understand your preference of not wanting "another black rifle", but it's already been proven how much better the gas piston system is over the ****ty ass direct impingement system that is still in use today by various militaries.

I'm not saying I dislike the GP system. What my problem with this whole thing is, SIG already has a GP system on a rifle that works perfectly. Its called the 556 and I own two. I wish they would put more time into their 550 rifles rather then going down the AR road.

the word on the street is that every one in the industry is gearing up for the Us military next generation rifle solicitation. Every one from FH, HK, SIG to Taurus are eying this opportunity, of course since then Taurus has backed out of the piston AR upper conversion, but companies such as SIG, FN, HK, Colt are still working feverishly on this possibility.
and with companies such as SIG that already have a running upper in hand, why not drop it to the LE and commercial market to some market share.

They have them here in NM at a couple of gun stores, they seem pretty sweet to me, very comfy. Although a bit pricey here at $1800 +.

the question is: what would you change in a 550? i've got a 550 stgw 90 which has a (somewhat) ak-feeling to it. i like it just fine. in fact i got used to it and once i got my hands on an ar, i had difficulties with the handling. shoving the magazine up that slot, charging handle, forward assist (wtf?). probably sounds funny to you guys, but it's just about the same when you see a gi firing an ak for the first time. they try to "rock" that magazine in place and change hands to charge or safe the rifle.
so what would you change? ak lower, collapsible stock and rails? --> 556
without the ar-feeling i'd just like mine shorter (551, or 552LB), maybe a fixed rail on the case and lighter.
----
btw: is it a trend to name rifles 556 at the moment? the sig, ruger has one, anyone else?
