MOSCOW (*******) - Israel told Russia it would not launch an attack on Iran, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in a CNN interview released Sunday, in which he described such an attack as "the worst thing that can be imagined."
Medvedev said Israeli President Shimon Peres made the pledge at a meeting in August. After the meeting Peres said Medvedev had promised to reconsider the sale to Iran of S-300 anti-aircraft systems that would complicate an Israeli attack.
Israel has hinted it could forcibly deny Iran the means to make an atomic bomb if Tehran continues to refuse to suspend uranium enrichment it claims is for peaceful purposes.
"When he visited me in Sochi, Israeli President Peres said something important for us all: 'Israel does not plan to launch any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this'," Medvedev said in the interview, which was recorded on Tuesday, according to a Kremlin transcript.
An attack would lead to "a humanitarian disaster, a vast number of refugees, Iran's wish to take revenge and not only upon Israel, to be honest, but upon other countries as well.
"But my Israeli colleagues told me that they were not planning to act in this way and I trust them," he said.
Asked about the possible delivery of S-300s, Medvedev said Russia had the right to sell defensive weapons to Iran. He said sanctions are often ineffective and no action should be taken against Iran, except as a last resort.
The chances of an agreement with the United States on a new treaty to reduce strategic offensive weapons by the end of the year remain "quite high," Medvedev said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Israeli officials have assured him that they are not planning a military strike on Iran.
In an interview with CNN television, Medvedev also confirmed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made a secret visit to Moscow this month that included a meeting with the Russian president.
In a transcript of the interview released by the Kremlin on Sunday, Medvedev hedged on the question of whether Russia would support Iran if it were attacked by Israel.
Although Russia has no defense agreement with Iran "this does not mean we would like to be or will be indifferent to such an occurrence... But my Israeli colleagues told me they were not planning to act in this way, and I trust them," Medvedev said.
According to *******, President Shimon Peres made the pledge to Medvedev during a meeting in the Russian resort of Sochi in August.
"When he visited me in Sochi, Israeli President Peres said something important for us all: 'Israel does not plan to launch any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this'," Medvedev said.
Medvedev also said the chances of an agreement with the United States on a new treaty to reduce strategic offensive weapons by the end of the year remain "quite high."
Israel has never officially made an open threat to attack Iran but has also insisted that it was not taking any option off the table regarding the Islamic Republic's contested nuclear program.
Iran insists its program is intended to produce energy.

I do not believe it one single bit. Im sure Netanyahu went over there to discuss some behind the scenes things...Why would a leader "secretly" go to Russia to tell them they are not planning/going to attack.. haha

It could be to tell the Russians not to provide S300 to Iran. S300 or S400 equipped Iranian air defence means most air attacks on Iran will fail in any case. Maybe Israel is persuading Russia to be a part of the coalition that may go after Iran after the six month waiting period is over by the end of this year.

Apparently it was not Netanyahu who made the pledge. It was Peres, in Sochi, in August.

I really doubt there is any coalition that will be willing to strike Iran.

n.
A scheme, program, or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment of an objective: a plan of attack.
v. tr.
To have as a specific aim or purpose; intend: They plan to buy a house.
I KNOW to an ontological certitude Israel has plans to attack Iran's nuke facilities. Their military would be derelict in the extreme if they didn't.
What we don't know is if they intend to attack.
Big dif. Professional Journalists should know not to use ambiguous language.

Two points: Russia clearly has many reasons to wish for no such attack. Thus, they may say that Peres has promised this, when in fact Peres 'promise' wasn't quite so ironclad.
Secondly, would Israel tell Russia before such an attack? I don't think so. They probably just don't want to give Russia any additional motive for giving Iran the S-300.

Don't bet on it. Iran has until the end of this year to come back to talks, if that does not happen, expect things to move.
