wouldn't it have just been easier to leave afghanistan in the hands of the taliban and bomb them into submission like pakistan did to the swat valley?

See how well that worked in Tora Bora? And how is that now with Pakistan? Affording the Taliban and AQ a whole country wouldn't be good.

if you have firefox, try going to the dictionary.com page for the word attrition. it says its a problem site for attacks and directs you away. of course you can go there anyways but, with the warning who would. whats its meaning?

I don't think any serious Western politcan is still under the illusion that it's possible to implement a REAL Democracy in Afghanistan. Mission success is to have a stable Afghan regime, which is friendly to the West and anti-Taliban. If that requires that the West cooperates with known drug kingpins and corrupt politicans, so be it.
