If you listen to the Howard Stern show, you must know that Howard has been furious with Kate Hudson, because of a soundbite played on the show. In the bite, which is an interview for a film which required her to spend three months in France, she said "No wonder why people don't like us, we're like the most annoying creatures... its like we eat MOUNDS of food and we're like where's our ketchup?" or something to that effect. Howard's argument is that coming up with such privelige, she is making herself out to be better than the rest of us Americans, and hoisting the French above us. He then went on to say that the French should lick our boots for defending their country after "easily" letting their country be taken over by the Nazi's. Should Kate Hudson be deemed anti-american and will you ever see one of her films again knowing this?

How could she prefer the french. I mean, look at them. They eat every kind of meat known to man.
They also have sod all to animal rights.
I went to France a year ago on a holiday and there was a bloke putting on a show, by putting tutus on dogs and forcing them to dance for the audience who looked like they enjoyed it a lot, I just walked away in disgust. But personally I would've prefered to have punched the basterd before walking away.
And she's says the french r better then americans, what a bitch!!!!

you're right, but I don't think that Americans hate all foreigners, or hate any and all criticism. THose types of responses typify an uneducated person or the proverbial straw that broke the camels back.
That is to say that a person has heard an argument over and over and answered questions about it many times and finally just gets pissed and has a case of the ass, it happens to the best of us.

I agree with UCT_Sinasta, who the Fu@# wants to see her movies anyway? Its like asking- If Barry Manilow was a communist would you still buy his records? (No offence to you Manilow fans, I know your out there.)
The british "bangers" ( sausages ), tasty as they are, don't they score quite high on the "every kind of meat known to man" list?
And does ketchup really go with everything? What about garlic?

Saranof,
PLEASE take the chip off of your shoulder. I am one of the more liberal users of this forum, but I think it would be nice if you stopped trying to pick fights along the lines of "Americans are arrogant, imperialistic, etc." I think that the only response you will get is an argument that we have all seen several times before.
I like to use different hot sauces instead of ketchup, piri-piri, good old tabasco and so on.

snails! Frogs legs! Patay(spelling), they make that by feeding ducks til they burst!
Need I go on?
Hmmm, you can make paté out of goose/duck liver , but from every other kind of meat as well. I've even had bear paté once, don't think it was force-fed Of course, the force-feeding of ducks is a crime of the highest order.

Bangers are no different than sausages anywhere(although tastier). Black pudding has all the good stuff in it.
Bangers are nice, black pudding even nicer, but don't you think they contain all kinds of leftovers from the slaughterhouse?

Food portions in U.S. on the rise
*
"Trend a factor in obesity," researchers say
The average size of the American meal has been growing steadily over the past two decades, a new study finds. *
Jan. 21 — *One reason why more Americans are obese is that the food portions served at restaurants and even at home keep getting bigger, researchers said Tuesday.
From the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, food portions in America grew by around 60 percent, and diets contained more unhealthy, salty foods, University of North Carolina researchers said.
* * * *“Many people have thought that portion sizes might be on the rise, but until now, there have been no empirical data to document actual increases,” said study co-author Samara Nielsen. “We think this is important information not only because it documents this trend, but also because obesity presents a growing health threat both in the United States and abroad.”
* * * *When combined with less physical activity than in decades past, bigger portions and unhealthier diets translate into greater risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health threats, said study co-author Barry Popkin.
* * * *Over two decades, the study found: the average portion size of salty snacks grew by 60 percent, or 93 calories, to 1.6 ounces; soft drink sizes expanded 50 percent, or 49 calories, to 19.9 fluid ounces; hamburger portions grew by 23 percent, or 97 calories, to 7 ounces and French fry portions grew by 16 percent, or 68 calories, to 3.6 ounces. Only pizza portions remained about the same at 476 calories in 6.1-ounces.
* * * *The findings were based on an analysis of the food intake of more than 63,000 individuals aged two and older compiled in three national surveys conducted in 1977, 1989, and 1996.
Select a topic below to find out more about the U.S. epidemic.
Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults are considered overweight, and an additional 31 percent are obese. Anyone with a body mass index (a ratio between your height and weight) of 25 or above -- that’s someone, for example, who is 5-foot-4 and 145 pounds -- is considered overweight, according to the National Institutes of Health. Anyone with a body mass index of 30 or above -- such as someone who is 5-foot-6 and 186 pounds -- is considered obese.Three hundred thousand people die each year due to obesity-related causes, making it the second-leading cause of death after smoking. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.Fifteen percent of youngsters ages 6 to 19 and 10 percent of children 2 through 5 are considered seriously overweight. About 45 percent of women and 25 percent of men are trying to lose weight at any one time, but only one-fifth are using the recommended combination of fewer calories and increased exercise.Americans spend more than $33 billion a year on weight-loss products and services. However, the economic cost of obesity in the United States was about $117 billion in 2000.Choose low-fat, lean foods from the five major food groups; eat sensible portions, and use fats, oils, sweets and salt sparingly. Total fat intake should be no more than 30 percent of daily calories. Exercise moderately for at least 30 minutes on most days. If you need to lose weight, do so gradually -- aim to lose about 10 percent of your body weight over 6 months.

IMPACT ON OBESITY RATE
* * * *The study published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association said the exact role of portion sizes in rising obesity rates could not be determined, but they have certainly contributed. Somewhere between one in three and one in five U.S. adults is obese, up from one in seven in 1977.
* * * *Finishing off the larger portions converts to additional body weight in the absence of more exercise, the study said. Every 10,000 calories (10 kilocalories) of food per day adds up to an extra pound of weight per year.
* * * *“It is easy to see the potential impact of large increases in portion sizes that ranged from 49 to 133 (kilocalories) per item for commonly consumed items,” the report said.
* * * *“Clearly the problem is that Americans are eating too much food,” Popkin said, adding that food choices are critical.
* * * *In 1977, snacks made up 11 percent of the average American’s food intake, while by 1996 they were 18 percent of the diet.
* * * *“Sometimes a conflict even exists between good nutrition and economics such as when you can get a significantly larger-size portion of French fries or soft drink for a very small extra cost,” Nielsen said, referring to the “super-size” promotions.

Yea, I agree that Americans eat too much, and too much junk, but doesn't anyone think that the rise in obesity is more profoundly linked to the decline in physical activity especially among children. I mean if a child is overweight and never exercises, is it likely to get better or worse as they move into adulthood. let's talk about what parents can do to get their kids up and moving, so that future generations can enjoy more freedom of movement, and better health. I suspect that the junk food issue would sort of sort it self out if we all lived healthier lifestyles. Just my two cents. ;)

Exactly, not only is it going to be a lifestyle change, it has to be a cultural change. Americans have a "gotta have it all" mentality when it comes to food. How else can you explain all-you-can-eat buffets? We want all the food we can possibly get in one serving, it's that "I want it, so therefore I should have it" mentality--this explains other lifestyle attitudes, too. The importance of physical activity has taken a nosedive. We're expecting TV, video games, and computers to raise and babysit our children. This all happened so quickly. I'm only 22, but I see it in my 5 to 10 year old cousins. They don't want to go outside to play, they want to watch TV and play video games. Kids are increasingly overweight. I think you have to draw the line somewhere. Sorry to get so preachy!

Agreed, molly! I don't know what exactly Ms. Hudson said, because I don't watch/listen to Howard Stern (gross)... but if what's in the first post is all she said, I've said as much before. I don't think it's an anti-American thing to say at all. There's a reason American tourists are known as "ugly."

WHAT A MINUTE! that is the goofiest misuse of a statistic I have heard yet on this sight!
Molly you wrote: "Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults are considered overweight, and an additional 31 percent are obese. "
That mean 65% of all americans are atleast overwieght or obese???
So if at any given time you are standing next to 4 people at least 2 of them are overwieght.....what the hell??? That means the overwhelming majority are overweight?? where do they all live?? I'm not seeing 65% of all people that inlcudes kids & grandparents- you are going to try and tell that 65% are overwieght.
That is one worst missuse of a statistic yet..
Show me the evidence to support it.
ohh and incidently by the calculations of the US government evander holyfield is "over weight" - hell because of his body size he would be considered too fat for the US Army -
but you go tell him - remember to duck and weave.

60% of Americans are definitely not overweight, anywhere you go. Everywhere I've been, the majority of people are reasonably fit (and of the two places I've lived so far, both are driving suburbs). My parents are both overweight, but the way I see it, they fit into the minority.
And as Tane said, it doesn't matter if someone's overweight if they're fine with it. Sure, their health may be in worse shape than others, but good for them if they don't have a problem with that.
"Just some thoughts..."

Well look at Molly's sources "Sources: AHA, NIH, CDC, NHNES"
I also remember similar statistics on the news awhile back.
I agree with Molly that kids rather go play video games, internet and watch tv instead of going outside and play sports. I rarely see kids outside playing ball or good ol street hockey.
If their being overweight or obeste with health problems is a drain on healthcare.

Europe Getting Too Fat, WHO Report Says
The Associated Press (http://latelinenews.com/ll/english/1248892.shtml)
For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Nearly one-third of all Europeans are obese because of fast-food consumption and sedentary lifestyles, and nations must encourage healthier habits, a U.N. agency warned Friday.
Obesity, once considered mostly an American problem, now is prevalent in European countries, where traditional diets have been associated with long life and good health, the World Health Organization said.
Nutritionists from 50 countries opened a three-day meeting in Athens to examine ways to fight a trend among the world's developed nations, where changing diets and more sedentary lives contribute to obesity-related health problems like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
``Obesity is becoming a very important problem in the European region but also outside Europe,'' Roberto Dortellini, technical division director of WHO Europe, told The Associated Press. ``It is a very major risk to the health of the European population.''
In Greece, the problem is particularly acute because many people have turned away from the country's traditional Mediterranean diet toward fast food, officials say.

I'm sorry if you doubt my sources,

MSNBC has proven to be mildly reliable in the news world...
maybe this will help. oh, and "overweight" doesn't mean grotesquely obese, it means 10-15+ pounds overweight. look at any pictures of people from before 1980 and compare them to people nowadays, you'll see a difference. There will always be exceptions (naturally skinny and genetically obese people), but, overall, the obesity epidemic is skyrocketing. Just watch the news once, you'll see. Oh, and the raising weight means rising health risks, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and muscle atrophy. Which, in turn, means more pressure on the health care system, which means more and more tax dollars at work. It's like a giant snowball, you see?
ibstolidude

hey while we are at it we should bash the somoan islands, yes?
and MSNBC has also been proven unreliable as well..
And thanks I'll pass on getting my nutrition info from the news, these were the same dolts that were surprised that smoking didn't give you vitiamins. thanks but I'll pass.
I know this will come as a shock, but it is a growing trend in most affluent cultures (through out history as well)....in some countries in this may be growing faster than others, but again one statistics are numbers they are interpreted as the data collector chooses the manner in which they are gathered.
But certainly now that Kate Hudson (the famed nutrionalist - thanks to her for she spoke out) has made it an international issue - we will all eat well, be fit and sue McDonalds (i heard they put cocaine in the french fries so you always come back).
