I read a very interesting collumn in Newsweek recently. It talked about the benefits of "open" primaries, rather than party primaries like we have now. Basically, the way things are today, politicians have to pander to the more hard-line elements of their respective parties, the "base" or the "fringe" or what have you. But they also have to do a balancing act and pander to the more centrist aspects as well, so they would have a chance of winning over some votes from the other side. And if we notice, most, not all, but certainly most, of the nutters and jackasses come from the base or fringe of their respective parties.
If instead we had open primaries, notice I'm not talking about general elections, then the candidates would find that the middle to be much more important than either of the two "wings" of the political spectrum. That way, the nutters on both sides could be ignored by serious politicians.
