In infantry what tactics differentiate both Marines and Soldiers. Also, from what i gather there are more marines in Afghanistan right now?

Also what are the different special forces within the Army, and the mariens. i.e. Rangers, SF, Force Recon, MEU, MARSOC etc.

Because U.S. Marines fight.
People want to see action if they switch on the TV.

what you been watching. Most the reports i see from Afghanistan are from the Army more so..

Richard Engel was in the Korengal valley in Kunar following Army Infantry for like a year..and the unit before that, that was in that area got alot of attention also..Richard Engel just had a report with the stryker soldiers in Kandahar that have been in alot of combat recently too...

Marines are amphibious and generally smaller numbers in comparison to the Army.

MEU stands for Marine Expeditionary Unit. Our Marine ninjas are MARSOC, Force Recon, and battalion Recon.

Smack talk from someone with no military experience is pretty retarded.

There are more soldiers than Marines in Afghanistan. Tactics are generally the same.

Seriously? 2003 called, it wants it's question back...

"Engagement Tactics"

Been thinking about this for a long time but maybe I just don't know enough about stuff that goes on once troops step outside the wire for foot patrols, long patrols.

I am thinking 1 stationary UAV for every platoon that goes out (or several, as long as it's in the same area) -- kinda like overwatch. UAVs give the troops on the ground eyes-on what's happening 1,000-3,000 yards ahead of them. See if hadj is setting up an ambush or if there are targets of opportunity out there that the troops can reach.

This kind of UAV would just float above for a week and generally just feed information to the people on the ground, but unlike any other mission, this particular UAV would just focus on that area -- nothing else.

Thoughts, critiques, pros and cons are all appreciated.

The Marines have very good PR people and always seem to welcome imbedded journalists. My unit did the exact same job the Marines are doing now in Helmand in 2007, and I'm sure there was a small group of Americans there before us, but you wouldn't know it because we didn't let reporters imbed with us. American's have had a presence in Helmand for years but the Marine PR people want you to believe they're the first to go there since we gave control to the Brits and Canadians.

In a nutshell, you
A: Gain fire superiority
B: Maneuver against the enemy
C: Destroy the enemy

Infantry engagement tactics:

Locate.
Close With.
Destroy By Fire and Maneuver.

Repeat.

Ever since WWI when the media got a hold of the Marines, they've glorified them quite extensively lol. I mean, yea, they totally deserve it, but its not like they deserve it any more than every other branch.

Every battle drill in the Army that we have learned basically operates exactly as James said. Suppressing fire, flank, kill.

Most likely you are just seeing more news reports coming out of astan with Marines because their at the point of the big push in the south right now. The army is doing their part too not to belittle them. One team, one fight.

I like that very funny,,,, My brother(Army inf.) and I (Marine inf.) have had this talk a few times over a bottle or two. I think that it comes down to marines are quick to to push the fight were army will push support both are basic the same just alittle different thinking . O and Marines will cover each other ass better when we do **** we should not. My wife AF Security is leaving for stan in Nov. and she has worked with both she said she likes working with marines better ...they ( higher ups) dont hold the lesh as tight as army cc

Because the media just picks out the coolest footage and lays over a voice track saying Marines, Soldiers, SEALs, blahlbahblah.

My favorite is when they are talking about "American armed forces" and it's clearly a British team. It's not hard to spot, because they have the big green gun with a misplaced magazine. :)

I never had the privilege of working with the Army.

Therefore I cannot offer a comparison. From my observation, the Marines are focused of moving mass quantity of men and materials to any location to set a beachhead, or airhead.

This is why Marine helicopters tend to be larger, organizational structure is more simplified and materials pre-positioned in critical areas to tap in.

Engagement tactics?

I thought they were the same for Army and USMC - romantic dinner, walk on the beach, then down on one knee, slip the ring on and pop the question?
