"A sudden wave of refugee claimants arriving in Canadian airports from Hungary has resulted in the federal government calling on Budapest to take action - possibly against organized crime elements - to contain the soaring number of asylum-seekers, Canwest News Service has learned.
The government hasn't yet moved to impose visa restrictions on Hungary, as it did over the summer to deal with a flood of claimants from Mexico and the Czech Republic.
But Ottawa also hasn't ruled out that option after Hungary emerged during the April-to-June period as the third-highest source of claimants, after Mexico and the Czech Republic.
With claims from those two countries falling to a trickle as a result of the summer decision, Hungary is on pace to emerge as Canada's top refugee source country - even though it is a member of the 27-nation European Union that champions itself as a bastion of human rights in the world.
``There are currently no plans to impose a visa on Hungary,'' said Alykhan Velshi, spokesman for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, in an e-mail. ``Visa- exempt countries are aware that if they do not satisfy the conditions of Canada's visa exemption, the requirement for a visa may be re-imposed.''
In the first half of this year 750 Hungarians made refugee claims, including 578 during the second quarter, from April 1 to June 30."

So have the Hungarians, asking the government to take action for years.
The Canadian press was also full of this 'poor Roma' articles as I recall.
Is it a surprise if they got the wrong idea?

X2. I have no clue what his position on this is. I think it is absurb that Canada accepts refugees from any EU country at all. Even if they do faces conditions worthy of 'refugee' status, isn't the whole point of the EU to create a European community. If you don't like it in Hungary, move to Denmark or something. Why Canada FFS? Refugee policy should be based on the 'first safe habor' principle. Refugees shouldn't get to cherry pick where they want to go, they should go to the nearest, safe place.

I think Canada had the same problem with some "refugees" from the Czech Republic some month ago.
The problem will solve itself. They are not refugees. As soon as they don't get financial support from the country (they are not refugees, why should they get it), they will come back. It happened in the last years so with Sweden as well. the "refugees" went to Sweden, the Swede government said, they are not refugees, won't get any money, they came back in a few weeks/months.
There are always people, who simply don't want to work, and can't believe that they have to earn they livings bythemself. Unfortunatelly we have a lot of them.

Something must be done to stop this Hungarian invasion. I recommend a ban on import of paprika and Rubik cubes.

Spot on man.
Although I do think the OP is somehow trying to infer that this issue is Canada's fault ?

Sorry, I must have highlighted the bit I was referring to:
'calling on Budapest to take action - possibly against organized crime elements'
And they are knocking on the wrong doors, the current Hungarian gov is not taking action against such, especially, if they are Roma.

I have no idea, why Canada, hence joking, they might get ideas from press.
Real refugees - as far as I know, most of them, indeed just run for nearest border. The point is, they are not refugees, to say the least.

Not at all. It was a joke. Probably more clear from the above.

Hehe, thanks for clarification - couldn't really tell. p-)
To most of us, the definition of refugee is pretty simple. Why immigration officials don't always seem to understand is kind of odd. At least Jason Kenney (citizenship minister) is trying to fix this. It's actually pretty impressive that he's got big enough ones to stand up to all the accusations of racism, etc. He's actually having a bit of success too:
The Czech thing was mentioned, and there is also Mexico. Apparently slapping Visas on them is fixing this problem so far. I forget the exact numbers, but I remember reading that it is close to something like 2500 to 40 refugee claims/month.

We've got plenty of Roma pissing everyone off in the whole of the EU.

We shall have a change of government soon, so this should decline, I don't know if they like to travel in winter that far, anyway.
If we do not have a change of government, you might just get non-Roma refugees in heaps. So, Canada wins either way.p-)
