Why get F-16s now, instead of say 20 years ago?

No Money?
Italian's share of PIL allocated to defense I think is about 1 %

Well maybe because used F16s still work great, destroy what they shoot or aim at and cost a lot less than the latest batch of jets. That is a pretty good set of reasons to me. If a Chevy Truck will do the trick then why would you need a Ferrari?

Whoa, they'll do for now mate. At least the Italian AF gets to play with a nice dogfighter until the Typhoon comes along. :)

nice photos, I think they look awesome...
I would like to thank the Italians for sticking it out with the Allies in Iraq...
Unlike some nations and some people who just like to complain.... when they aren't doing there bit.

Italy recived 34 F16A ADF with a 8/10 years leasing,3 squadrons are equipped with F16, we have it like a "gap-filler" between the old F104 ASA and the new EF2000 (4 planes are now in the first squadron)

PS:Italian's share of PIL allocated to defense is 1.5 % :(

Yeah it could be true, for now Italy doesn't need F16c or F15c but if at a future time Italy will go to war ? or there will be truble with EF-2000 ?
What will be Italy's main fighter 34 F16A ADF and 10 EF-2000 ?

yes,2005 will be a bad year for italian's fighters with only 34 F16 and few EF 2000 ,I hope that in 2006 we have a sufficent number of EF2000.
Italy ordered 20/30 F35(SVTOL version) for the navy and 80/100 for AF.

F35 is the replacement for AMX (80/100 planes no more),i think that the Tornado will' be replaced by a specific version of EF2000 tranche 3 in 2020 if there aren't any sort of problems. :|

rofl rofl magari! i remember that , for example in '98 was 1.07%....

and for MoD 1.5% is a impossible goal for this legislature...
