Yesterday was the anniversary of the loss of HMS Royal Oak as she lay anchored in Scapa Flow 14th October 1939 and was torpedod by U47 , Princess Anne and 3 surviving crew members placed a wreath at the site from HMS Penzance where a memorial service was held .

My great uncle died on it :-(

John William Blackborough, He was a Stoker 1st Class. I guess that means he was in the engine room.

Gunther Prien certainly knew his stuff. Such a beautiful ship with a proud crew. Terrible loss.

Read today that the story of the sinking will be taught in scottish schools from now on.
