I am always skeptical of the trials.... At least a Patricia is in chage of it!
We are getting some on this tour coming up apparently... But unless they change the body armour I will stick with my split MAV.

Shouldn't they be doing the trials while wearing body armor? I'm no expert, but I'd think using body armor would affect how well the vests work.

You are correct... Good observation. Its typical.....
We need to go to a RAV type, but that would mean changing the body armour. And critics want us to have as much body armour on as possible.... Hense the should protection that comes down to your bicep. Good for turret or air sentry, but brutal for dismounted work.
I hope they don't look at a model and then decide to make our own version instead of taking one off the shelf.

Because Pacific Safety Products is just too expensive. And because for some reason the Army hates CPGear.
Pete031
10-15-2009, 01:54 PM
I hate CP Gear too.
But you know, if TT or Eagle or Paraclete make a good rig, lets just get it from them.... I hate how everything has to be made here.
I had a Pacific Safety Products rig on my last tour... Was good quality, but only the sides of the rig were modular, the mag pouches and whanot were fixed.
I would rather a Releasable plate carrier type thing.

I like having the ability to be fully armoured without my fighting order on; my job could call for me being turret crew one day and a designated dismount the next. If I read you correctly, you'd like an all in one package. We can both agree our frag vest needs fixing.
And to be quite honest, CP Gear has come a LONG way the last few years; I felt confident replacing my fixed pouch HSGI rig with a CP Gear KISS rig after my last tour... They just haven't shaken that stigma quite yet.

Nah, I want soft shell body armour, that will be more fitting then what we have now, and then a plate carrier to go on top.
Yeah you Armoured guys need a different setup.
I hate CP gear, I did a sniper course a few years ago, and when I was making my ghillie, I wanted some webbing sewed on to a few places, so I thought what the hell I'll bring it there...
Well, they said they didn't do that kind of work, after looking at the thing for a little while...
I was in there a few months later, and there was a replica of my ghillie sitting there for like 400 bucks... ****ers.

Hopefully they're accurate when they say they want the new rigs issued to the troops in theater in a timely manner...
Good to see they're looking at implementing kit that works. I think I recognize some Tactical Tailor and SORD nylon in there. If they keep up the quality, it's GTG.

Over 50% of the soldiers in my Regiment have served overseas in the last 3-4 years....most of them outside the wire. Several of them have been wounded as a result of their service. You might recognize one of their names Capt. Trevor Green?

I think you may have read that wrong; I don't think Critter was implying that us Mo-fags are all desk pilots. It seemed to me that he liked the fact that everyone is getting some say in the vest, and that the admin types need to have some input as well. With wicked pouches for their Staetdlers and Blackberries.

The Aussies I worked with for a bit on 1-06 had some SORD kit. Seemed to be Tac Tailor quality and seemingly has improved the last few years.

The comment was directed at the setting they were in...a NON field location for a piece of equipment to be used in the field...
my point being experience and real time usage...
dropping by an armouries for a day or two to have different soldiers test out equipment is not a good way to display the testing process... now I'm sure there was all kinds of field testing completed prior to this vid being made.

Seriously though, this is something that we need to get right. Alot of money has been invested into these tac vests that nobody likes. We have a crap-load of green and tan ones which boils down to big waste of money. I don't know about other areas but LFQA is making big budget cuts right now. They trialed these in CFB Valcartier a couple of weeks ago. I was actually part of this trial (not directly).
They split our group in two; half of us tested the new vests and half of us tested... something else. I was in the group that did not test the vests but both groups hung out together a lot so I got to fiddle with a bit of everything.
The group that did try out the vests had 3 different models to try out. Everyone did exercises in the field, everyone did the obstacle courses with all the different stuff to compare, everyone went to the live ranges and did run-downs and gun fighter drills and a lot of other stuff. We didn't stay inside our buildings... It was also pouring rain for 2 weeks straight while we were outside.
Future rotos are going to field test the vests on the two-way range so this project of issuing new vests is coming along VERY nicely.
Hint: We'll have something new to protect our heads in the near future.
Edit: Oh yeah and the guys that tested these were mostly reg force infantry. I'm a weapons tech (only EME guy that was there), I saw some transmissions guys, armoured dudes and stuff. Everyone had to send a few volunteers for this.

My point being is even though they do this testing and trials, they will and ALREADY have an idea which piece of equipment they are going to purchase... It's just a matter of figuring out who wants to make a build a production plant in Canada, to make it.
I might be wrong, but it has been the case for pretty much everything the CF procures (LSVW, B.E.W. Tacvest, cbt boot)
BTW the 4 examples listed above all failed their trials...
...food for thought

You'll see a tender go out on MERX for some sort of modular TV created from everyones input, for a Canadian company to build the abortion. You know, the Canadian version, that we have tested, and designed blah blah blah
Two years from now we might have something.
Any purchase over $25,000 must be approved by public works and go for tender. Anything below that, at 1500 pieces = around $15 each.
