MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Amphibious operations made a debut in the Marine Corps during the Revolutionary War when Marines stormed the sands of New Providence, Bahamas in 1776. Technology and concepts have improved since the 18th century, allowing troops to reach inland objectives faster and safer. With a top speed of 40 knots and the ability to travel ashore from more than 25 nautical miles away, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle brings another tool to the Corps’ amphibious arsenal.
Camp Pendleton’s Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch took possession of the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle Command Variant-1 System Development and Demonstration-2, also known as EFVC-1 SDD-2, June 29. AVTB will begin a series of land, amphibious and firepower tests over the next four to six months to assist General Dynamics, the vehicle’s developer, in evaluation of the advanced features on board prior to production scheduled for fiscal year 2012.
“We’re taking hold of these vehicles and starting the developmental testing this week,” said Capt. Charles R. Ibatuan, AVTB’s communications officer, who added that the communication systems remained the same, but many changes have taken place since the development of the first command variant prototype, the SDD-1, in 2003.
After a series of testing and feedback the SDD-2 was developed, replacing the first prototype, and is now the focus of the EFV program.
Following the SDD-2’s introduction, developmental test operators explained the systems and advantages over the first command variant prototype.
“The capability of the SDD-2 greatly supersedes those of its predecessor. This prototype is much more user friendly,” explained Sgt. Robert Baxter, a developmental test operator with AVTB.
With the command element in mind, the SDD-2’s mission is to provide unit commanders and selected staff the ability to communicate with subordinate units while maintaining survivability, along with water and ground maneuverability, according to EFV program documents.
“The specific mission of the Amphibious Assault Vehicle is to carry troops and cargo ashore. We’re not carrying cargo [in the EFV] but we’re getting troops inland quickly and getting them there safely, while giving them enhanced capabilities to communicate and increasing firepower,” added Baxter, 26, from Scottsdale, Ariz.
Noticeable improvements to the vehicle include a fully-stabilized 30 mm cannon and 7.62 mm machine-gun.
“The 30 mm cannon allows Marines to engage enemy vehicles, while the 7.62 mm machine-gun targets infantry in the open,” said Col. Keith M. Moore, EFV program manager.
Improved munitions are one of many changes to the vehicle’s blueprints, offering Marines assurance of lethality and increasing firepower for possible operations on foreign lands.
“The EFV is essential to the Marine Corps mission. There are programs that are absolutely and vitally important. One of those is our EFV,” said Gen. James T. Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps.
EFV full-rate production is expected by FY15 with 573 being produced by FY25. Once in service, the EFV will allow Marines to penetrate inland objectives by sea from distances over the horizon with more speed and control while offering superb protection against opposing forces.

Will do. I'll try scanning in later. Just flicking through it, there's also an article on some CTCRM CC staff on a USMC Martial arts programme.
M3 differs from M2 while sharing same chassis.

I know the differences in M2 and M3 vehicles.
In case of LAV-25 such modification as it seems was not needed.

ANCON, Peru - As part of a 10 country multi-national training exercise, Partnership of the Americas / Southern Exchange 2010, U.S. Marine reservists from Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force 24, have been conducting their annual summer training at the Peruvian Marine Corps base to hone their military skill sets—not to mention their Spanish and Portuguese.
Over the past week, Marines from the U.S. and nine other partner nations have come together to focus on fundamentals that are necessary to enhance each nation's peacekeeping and humanitarian disaster relief capabilities, should the need arise.
From day one of the exercise, the 1,300 Marines and Corpsmen, originating from ten different nations, were broken into diversified training groups to encourage and foster cross-training. Each platoon is comprised of members from each nation with its own interpreters. Although the languages, dialects, and uniforms are different they are all eager Marines ready to train.
Training has been organized and effective to include: weapons firing, riot control/crowd control, convoy operations, first aid, water survival, amphibious training, martial arts, patrolling, and checkpoint operations to name a few.
Training also includes a number of classroom sessions like, Laws of War and Human Rights refresher courses taught by various experts representing each participating nation.
The combined exercise will provide participants the opportunity to train by air, land, and sea. Peru has provided a number of ground and amphibious vehicles and the U.S. is shuttling groups via three CH-46 helicopters, multiple ground transport vehicles, and a platoon of amphibious assault vehicles—all of which were brought to Peru on the USS New Orleans.
Live-fire exercises include pistol, machine gun and sniper ranges that promote arms exchange, allowing Marines of all nations to shoot foreign weapons and learn the different techniques and shooting styles that each country has to offer.
Multinational exercises offer a multitude of training opportunities and foster the exchange of ideas while training. Successful participants will return to their homeland with greater skills and the ability to train others these new military techniques—and maybe some new foreign words too.
The combined exercises, Partnership of the Americas 2010 and Southern Exchange 2010, will run simultaneously from July 2-24 in Salinas and Ancon, Peru. The exercises will focus on interoperability between the USMC and forces from nine other partner nations, exposing them to fundamentals that will enhance partner nation capabilities in the execution of peacekeeping operations and humanitarian aid/disaster relief missions that are common amongst Marines throughout the Americas: marksmanship, patrolling, convoy operations, water survival, amphibious training, checkpoint operations, civil affairs, human rights training and military operations in urban terrain.

COMBAT OUTPOST CASTLE, Afghanistan – In late afternoon July 9, the sun setting when alarming news reached the corpsman at the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion’s Basic Aid Station.
“A messenger came in and notified us that there were two [girls] that showed up at the south gate,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kyle Coughlin, senior corpsman with the Police Mentoring Team, 1st LAR Bn, from Mesa, Ariz.
The corpsmen went to the south gate to help. They learned that the girls fell in the river and weren’t breathing.
“So, I ran up with another corpsman and started assessing the girls. The younger girl wasn’t responding,” said Coughlin, 22.
The corpsmen had to move quickly if the girls were to have any chance of surviving.
“We took the older one and cleared her airway and got some of the water out, but she still wouldn’t respond unless when administrated pain to keep her awake,” Coughlin said.
The corpsmen then purged the water from her lungs to stabilize her.
“At that point she was able to breath on her own,” Coughlin said.
The younger girl still wasn’t breathing. Twenty minutes had passed, but the corpsmen weren’t ready to quit. The sailors called in a medical evacuation helicopter to take them to a larger medical facility.
“I could tell she still had some fight in her. She wasn’t ready to give up, and I wasn’t willing to give up on her,” Coughlin said.
“It’s all about helping the patient and focusing on what I can do to the best of my capabilities to bring them back,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Palma, a corpsman with the PMT, 1st LAR Bn., from Dededo, Guam.
The corpsmen did everything in their power to save the girls.
“They both left the BAS alive and with hope they would survive this incident, but unfortunately only one made it back,” Coughlin said.
“I know that my corpsmen did well that day and I am confident that everything that could be done, was done.”
Although the corpsmen weren’t able to save both the girls, they remain hopeful that the family knows they did their best.
“I hope that when people see what we’re doing, they realize that we’re here for them,” Coughlin said. “We’re here to protect them from the insurgents and help is available to anyone that asks for it. We want to help them in any way that we can.”

PATROL BASE SAIPAN, Afghanistan – Lance Cpl. Sharhonda U. Jones had constantly been asking her command for a chance to deploy, so when they approached her and told her about the new female engagement team program, she jumped at the opportunity.
The 21-year-old from Wills Point, Texas, trained for three months before she deployed. She participated in field and weapons training, as well as classes on the Pashtu language and civil affairs.
The FET members, with Regimental Combat Team 7, believe that the more they go out and are seen by Afghan men, they will start to see what their women are capable of and give them a chance to become business women, teachers and even members of the government. Male Marines cannot effectively talk to the Afghan women because of cultural sensitivities.
“When I had to search my first Afghan woman, it was scary,” said Jones, originally an administration clerk. “I could see she was uncomfortable because she thought I was a guy.”
Jones, admitting it was hard to engage Afghan women at first, said that most of the locals in this area have never seen an African-American female before. They have grown accustom to only seeing African-American males come through. Every time Jones visits a compound or is involved in a village medical outreach, the local females automatically assume she is a male.
Jones has become more vocal around the women and has even gone as far as removing her flak so they can see her female figure. This way the Afghans are more comfortable and Jones can move on with her mission of engaging the Afghan women and children; showing them that this is so much more than just a war – the Marines are helping the Afghans build their government and use their own resources to rebuild their country after years of fighting.
“She’s great with the kids,” said Lance Cpl. Kathryn L. Mannion, Jones’s team leader with the FET. “And once the Afghan women realize she is a woman as well, they get a kick out of her. She’s really funny.”
Most FET members get assigned to ground forces made up of entirely male Marines, but Jones has a different perspective than most female Marines on that topic.
“I like it,” she exclaimed. “Growing up around males, I believe I have a different look on the Marine Corps. I see what they are going through and I have a lot of respect for them.”
She said that the male Marines have grown accustomed to working with her and her teammate, and they are treated as one of their own.
“She makes friends really easily,” Mannion said. “Everywhere we go, she always knows just about everyone there.”
Jones really enjoys and is proud of what she is doing out here, but when she returns home, she is going to be busy putting in her reenlistment package and her plan is to request temporary orders to try out for the Marine Corps basketball team.
“She loves the Marine Corps; I’ve never heard her complain once, no matter how bad the living conditions can get,” Mannion said. “She’s more than just a team member, she is a great friend.”

ON BOARD USS PELELIU – Marine snipers with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit were given a rare opportunity to practice their specialized skills aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu, July 9.
The Scout Sniper Platoon received their new M40A5 rifle just days before their scheduled Western Pacific deployment, preventing them from setting accurate measurements to properly employ the weapon.
“We needed to get her dialed in,” said Sgt Nicholas B. Abernathy, scout sniper team leader, H&S Company, 1st Bn, 4th Marines, referring to his new best friend. “This was my first time firing the new M40A5 rifle, I deployed with my old weapon twice and she was good to me,” added Abernathy.
Adopted in January 2009, the new rifle now uses a flash hider or suppressor and a detachable box magazine.
“The new suppressor can allow the shooter to engage the enemy longer from the same position,” said Abernathy.
Despite the windy conditions and firing from a moving target, the snipers not only accomplished their goals but learned something new.
“My spotter and I figured out there is a natural pause during the ship’s movement,” stated Abernathy. “As the ship moves down, just before it rises there seems to be a natural pause, much like the same pause we experience during breathing.”
During marksmanship training, Marines are taught to slowly and steadily squeeze the trigger during this natural pause in breathing. As for the snipers, the new data made the training more meaningful.
“We never know when or where we’ll be asked to employ our specialty,” said Cpl. Emmanuel P. Velayo, radio operator and spotter, H&S Company, 1st Bn, 4th Marines. “So firing from the ship really helped us know what to expect if we ever have to engage the enemy from the ship.”
While this was their first time firing the new weapon, the snipers routinely check their weapons out of the armory. If there’s one thing Abernathy has learned in his five years as a sniper, don’t get complacent.
“Once or twice a week we break out our weapons to [dry fire] and clean them,” said Abernathy. “Marksmanship is a perishable skill and I believe [dry firing] is absolutely critical. Muscle memory is what it’s all about,” added Abernathy.
The trigger time was useful and the snipers recognized the significance of having the rare opportunity to fire their precision weapons from the flight deck.
“Firing these weapons aboard a ship wasn’t easy to coordinate,” said 1st Lt. Michael P. Buckley, scout sniper platoon commander, H&S Company, 1st Bn, 4th Marines. “I’m glad we could though, the juice was definitely worth the squeeze,” he added.

You should take pride in your MOS, and serving in any capacity in unform is honorable.
But just keep in mind that Infantry is a way of life, not just occasionally running through the woods with an M4 and MILES gear.

‘War Dog’ Marine Awarded Silver Star

Lance Cpl. Platoon Commander (Plt. Ldr. is an Army concept) is the battalion Intelligence Officer. They seldom get any trigger time since they are mostly involved with other tasks involved in planning platoon operations.

A Scout Sniper Platoon is composed of 8-10 Scout Sniper teams, two men each. They are the eyes and ear of the battalion commander, working independently from rifle companies or attached to rifle companies as a 4 member team.

Lance Cpl. Mike Lawver, an electronics technician with Regimental Combat Team 2, fires his M16 A2 service rifle during an engagement with enemy forces just outside the walls of Forward Operating Base Jackson in Helmand province, July 23. Lawver and his fellow Marines ran towards the area of enemy fire and began returning fire while concealed via a protective barrier. The firefight began early in the evening and continued for about an hour after insurgents, concealed within a nearby tree line, began firing at the base. British forces and U.S. Marines fought off the attack with machine-gun fire, mortars, and several missiles.

yea..thats an m16A4....
the biggest differences i see between our thread and the Army's is that our guys are always dirty as hell and we have an optic, maybe a broomstick/PEQ2 on our weapons...while the Army has a ACOG/EOTECH/203/PEQ/Broomstick/Surefire on an M4. Maybe there gear queers, maybe they REALLY need all that weight on there m4.

I am not a marine nor do i play one on TV, but from what I understand they had some trials and the marines preferred the LWH over the ACH because they felt more protected by it...I have one and also an ACH, and I tend to agree with that...IMHO the LWH is a better choice but then again, I am just an armchair commando, I am sure some of the real marines here will chime in. In any case, the marines have gone back to using their own gear which is different from the army gear...not just a different helmet.

There are several reasons why we don't. When Congress hands down Department of the Army its budget, they decide what to purchase, just as we do in the Department of the Navy/Marine Corps. Our different structure, doctrine, mission capability incoperates different aspects on the types of equipment we use. We also prefer to look somewhat different then our Army brothers, plus take great pride in our traditions, and because we can.
I am not a marine... I am just an armchair commando...

Thanks for these pics Vor, we relieved 3/3 in Feb. 08. The base behind them, OP Delta, was turned over to the Iraqis about two years ago. While we were in the process of turning it over to the IPs, they managed to set it on fire, and burned about half of the damn place down because they couldn't comprehend the Marine rule of 'NO OPEN FLAME INSIDE' due to the large amount of plywood. Funniest thing I ever saw were the Iraqis running out of their rooms, choking on smoke and screaming for help while a company of NAM hungry Marines dove headfirst into a building consumed by fire wearing gas masks and silkies, armed with fire extinguishers and water-bottles. Go figure.

REPORTED FOR RACISM!!!
Are they pinning a new rank to him or what?

Roger that. We would walk through the gauntlet, for our unofficial promotion, Marines of your rank and/or higher would take one swing at your arm. However, for a newly promoted Corporal, you rate wearing red "service stripes" on your dress blue trousers. Not only do Cpl's get smacked on the arms, but they also get kneed on the side of the leg (above your knee) for their "blood stripes". That's just who we are as Marines.

When I got corporal grade (during my conscript year), the only thing my squad leader said was "You've just been pimped" and pulled my shirt in true Pimp my ride style...
Yours is better ;)

Terminal Lance. It was a great day when a Security Forces POG picked up Cpl. shortly after transferring into our unit and all the bitter E3s just filed into his room and gave him his blood stripes, because we all figured we rated it more than he did. He didn't say a damn thing about it either. At least he wasn't a pussy. p-)

After getting my blood stripes, I drove back home to L.A. from Camp Pendleton. Several hours later, I stopped off at a gas station. As soon as my feet hit the deck, I almost planted my face on the gas pumps. My legs felt like Linguine! p-)

The Corporals course began July 12, and will end Aug. 9. This was an effort to maintain the field training operations implemented in a Corporal's Course. Due to the lack of ability to go to the field, this was the best way for them to get the training. These Marines embarked upon USS Nassau approximately seven months ago and will be arriving home shortly. This course will send them back to their parent commands well prepared and ready to take on the next level as a Marine.

IIRC, Marines in Beirut wore US flags on their sleeves. I don't think we had them in Desert Shield/Storm.
What I hated seeing was US Army vets with 1st and 2nd Marine Division combat patches, which were authorized since they were attached to the Marines for combat ops during the Iraq War. As a Guardsman who was with 2nd Marine Division in Gulf War I, I hated the fact that I couldn't wear the divisional patch, but someone from the Army could.

They are Navy Seabees.
As for a few captions, they should read Marines rather then soldier since you can clearly see the Eagle, Globe & Anchor on helmets or USMC chevrons on their flak-jackets.

It's interesting how much more 'advanced' the equipment that the individual soldier/marine is now compared to just a few years back.

The last set of pictures are from 2006. I was personally there when one of the sniper rifles from a slain 2/4 STA Plt was recovered. For those that don't remeber what I'm talking about, you can read here: http://www.blackfive.net/main/2006/06/marine_sniper_t.html
If I remember correctly, this took place only days before we were due to be relieved by the oncoming unit. It was a dramatic end to what was arguably the most dreadful, violent year in Iraq, overall. If anybody from 2/4 or 3/5 are members here, then you are fully aware that our two battalions were vicious arch-enemies. The incidents between us bordered on gang warfare. But, I don't think anyone was more proud than we, when it was discovered that we had personally avenged our sister battalion. Hollywood couldn't have written a more fitting end.(Even though we crushed them in that brawl on the ball court when we got back.:D)
About 3/5 STA, during the years between '04-'06, we probably had one of the top 5, if not the best STA Plt in the entire Corps. Personal biases aside, some of the 3/5 snipers we had border on legendary. The shooter of these two terrorists(not named out of respect for his privacy, he declined all interviews about the incident) was already well know throughout the community before this op. And in '06, everyone in the team was a HOG except for two new joins. A better group of guys couldn't have been assembled to pull this off...

Peleliu is the lead ship of Expeditionary Strike Group One (ESG-1) which departed San Diego Aug. 22 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The strike group centers on the flexibility and readiness of a combined expeditionary unit and an amphibious readiness group (ARG); in this case, the 13th MEU and the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group. Augmenting the ARG, three surface combatants - a destroyer, frigate and cruiser - and a fast-attack submarine provide capabilities similar to that of a carrier battle group.

Yes, an RF-4. Yes again on FAST, but "glorified fire-watch" is something not worth bragging about. Non-judicial punishment is a form of military justice.

KHAN NESHIN GHAR, Afghanistan - Petty Officer 3rd Class Donte Veals, a corpsman with the 1st Marine Division (Forward)'s Personal Security Detachment, provides security at helicopter landing zone Barton as a CH-53E Super Stallion from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Fwd), takes off Aug. 16. HMH-361 transported Veals, 16 Marines and six geologists to the remote area in support of Operation Centrum so they could gather rock samples in search of rare valuable earth elements. The mountainous terrain made the area inaccessible by vehicle, and having a close HLZ and heavy-lifting helos allowed the group to remove almost 200 pounds of samples for further testing.

HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Capt. Brian O'Shea, the officer in charge of the 1st Marine Division's Personal Security Detail, provides overwatch for his Marines and a team of geologists Aug. 16 while on a patrol in support of Operation Centrum. O'Shea led a team of 16 Marines and one Navy Corpsman who provided security for 6 geologists as they searched for rare earth elements and industrial minerals. The team took about 200 pounds of rock samples from the area. They will analyze the samples in a lab and provide the results to the Minister of Mines for Afghanistan. The Minister of Mines can use the information to attract investors. A mining operation in this area could create funding for the Afghan government and provide thousands of jobs.
