President Obama recently shifted authority for approving sales to China of missile and space technology from the White House to the Commerce Department -- a move critics say will loosen export controls and potentially benefit Chinese missile development.
The president issued a little-noticed "presidential determination" Sept. 29 that delegated authority for determining whether missile and space exports should be approved for China to Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.

If this is true - and it appears the source is a valid one (am looking for others) this is a stunning step - I cannot believe that again, under the guise (as the article points out) of space co-operation, President Obama is going to allow sensitive US technology to flow into China without White House approval first.

Dual use technology transfer is a very dangerous game, but handing over the US technology for 'space access' is in my honest opinion nothing short of total and utter lunacy. We all know that space access and ICBM technology is identical bar the damn bomb on board and a few side show bits and pieces... I really some times am at a loss for words at the apparrent amnesia those in power suffer.

Well, what I can say, excellent move for Mr. president, of course if it's true at all.

We have been always waiting to cooperate with MD. Together we go far. :)

Nothing from this Admin surprises me anymore.

On the other hand, might as well share. They will just try and steal the tech in the long run, better to have some hand in it, than none at all.

They might as well hand over Trident system and be done with it. All this is doing is giving the latest missile technology disguised as 'space use' material. Its a frigging military disaster waiting to happen.

What next though seriously? F-22? X-47B??

nothing new. pentagon has always evaluated china's tech progress. there's always a list provided to doc

bottom line, exporting these gauged technologies only turn down china's own r&d in this area.

Since the Chinese copy every technology anyway it's the one and only move the U.S. can make: Cooperation.

Hmmm. Maybe Brobama realized that China's rise in global affairs is no longer containable through ineffective technological embargoes and refusal for cooperation in specific sciencetific fields. Like Bush's refusal to cooperate with China on the International Space Station, which leads to Chinas own space-station project, that cannot be controlled by the US, once initiated. In many ways, Brobama acts kinda wise here: Bring your Enemies closer than you friends for direct control.

Well. Lets see how China reacts.

to let themselves being controlled by the US. a thing so valuable, that even money cannot buy.

Hopefully China realizes that this 'offer' is a damn trap.

Considering China has already stolen so much U.S missile tech maybe he figures it won't make a difference?

all they need is low=res picture and a week later monkey modles are rolling off the assembly line. As you said may as well giv in now. better chance they will get bored of it sooner.
