Can I cheat a little? I'm going to go with US, British Commonwealth( ;), Canada, Aus. and NZ are all Commonwealth members, right?), Israel, EU, and Russia, in no particular order. What? p-)
That's a tough question, bud. I can't really limit it to five, and don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by inevitably leaving someone out accidentally, so I'll just say I have no clue.
Classified information, sorry.

it even say's it in the article, the comp was very very close, on event's with maximum 100 point score's the top 20 were seperated by 7 point's they had to use fraction's it was so tight, If we had gotten a few more point's we would have won, if we had lost a few we would hve come 20, you shouldn't take GROM position as where they finish they had a top 3, and 2 top 5 finish's, it was the average atthe end of the week that was counted

Guys in special unit like SOF are never interested in being champion. They are more interested in doing their job well. At this least this is the impression I got from some SOF guys in my country. They never show off their elite trooper status and are usually very quiet about their job.

yep delta have you forgotten somalia and iranian desert failures
yep delta have you forgotten somalia and iranian desert failures
Those weren't competitions. They were real life. If you really want to get technical, its mainly either the Politicians fault for pulling 'em outta Somalia too early too get Aidid (although I doubt i would help Somalia much anyways), and the AF fault for f**king up by colliding with each other at Desert One. Anyways, I think for the most part CTs in all countries are good. Plus without Desert One, 160th, and SOCOM wouldn't be around now.

No SAS? That's preposterous, they deserve a mention simply because of this;

I would be interested for anyone to inform me of any failed SAS CT operations as there are many other Special Forces with a rather worse record...

The reason the SAS, or Delta force and the SEAL's didn'ttake part was, they were and are slightly to busy at the moment, it has nothing to do with past op's or anything else, and for God sake it's only a friendly compeition, not life or death :cantbeli:

24th. SCTU. India

What the heck is SCTU? :D
The ct unit of the para-commandos
Moughoun,
Thanks. Do you have a source or more details on the SCTU? I have never heard of them. Most. if not all , para commandos are also invloved in CT ops. Is there a special unit for CT only? Can you provide more details on this unit and their participation in this event..
Thanks in advance

No problem, SCTU (special counter terrorist unit) of the Para commandos, is around 100 strong, formed in 1979 and is reputed to be Asia's finest HRU,it is based at Sarsawa airbase in uttar predesh, Extremily well trained SCTU personnel are airborne and commando trained before joining, they then develope a wide range of specialist HRU skills including CQB, breaching, rappeling, surveillance techniques, communication and the use of explosive's, basically they are India's SAS or Delta force, happy with that :)

The NSG and the SCTU do 2 different mission's,NSG is Counter terrorisim in it's broadest sense, they are not really a sf unit more of a para-military one while SCTU is the nation's hostage rescue team

Moughoun,
Actually the NSG is the premier CT/HRT unit. All the previous HR operations have been undertaken by them. Akshardham, Srinagar rescue etc etc. There is a team on permanent stand-by at Palam airport with a dedicated IL-76 allotted to them.

I love those lists.
Accept one little thing. Russian ALFA outperforms any of those teams on the list. The US, Israeli and UK would be a good match.

I just look at those with experience, and credit for completed missions.
US, Russia, UK, Israel has the best special forces in the world.
all those countries above are at war since the end of WW2. Gaining experience, knowledge, perfecting the weapons, and taking names.
Somehow I can't see Italian Special Forces to be as valuable in experience and knowledge as Russian Alfa or Speznaz GRU.
Or some Kantopolizei Aaragu, Team Argus compared to US Delta or UKs SAS. humorous...

No you said ALPHA would outperform that's not the same as experience, and sf don't need to have been in a general war to have experience, and a half assed assault on a Russian theater isn't something to be put in the good op side of the equation

Why wouldn't they have valuable experience? Belgian SIE for instance has plenty of experience since they are a police units and are often used in arresting important and dangerous criminals...
Belgian Special-Forces group has lots of experience too, they were present in Somalië... They were protecting the border in Turkey during GW1 etc.
Every country SF of CT unit has plenty of experience, not all missions might be broadcasted on TV or in the newspapers as much as their US or Russian equivalants...
IMO the list is useless without scores or something... And I find it hard to believe that among Western troops their would be a difference in quality, esp. with the joined exercises and similar training etc.

lol guys. At the end of the day, there practically as good as each other really. The only major differance between them is technology.
My Fave CT unit would have to be the SAS's CT troop. Those guys would give me the ****s if they stormed my room lol!!!

Delta, SAS, DEVGRU............ Did anyone doubted about the answers??
In my opinion this debate is nonsense since most CT and SF units are similar and capable of the same things. The difference like in most other things is that the anglo-saxon world is where you can get info, movies and videogames about military operations. Everyone knows SAS (appart from the fact that they are outstanding) because of all the media coverage, and the wars they fight in. For example , nobody talks about french units that have the same or even more experience gained in wars like Algeria, Chad, Ivory Coast....
Like those there are dozens of examples, the portuguese have been fighting for years in Angola and Mozambique, the italians have been searching for war criminals in Bosnia (not only Delta and SAS) ,spanish CT units have been dealing with hostage situations and terrorists for 30 years know.....But it's hard to get info on those things.
If there was some kind of quality difference in CT or SF units, then why in Enduring Freedom are Norwegian HJK soldiers instead of doing all the work americans and brits themselves? Or why did the spanish UOE board a north korean ship carrying 15 scuds in the gulf of aden instead of doing it the navy SEALs (they were around the area too)?
If the supposedly best trust they're not so good partners, i think it means they are not sooooo better than the rest, know what i mean?
Since they all take part in joint exercises and share their experiences you can't say which unit is the best. Simply don't exist.
PermskiiOMON, ALPHA is the best why? Killing 50 terrorist and dozens of hostages. I'm sure italian GIS or NOCS have far more experience dealing succesfully with hostage situations (i mean not killing them). If you've read Haneys book (Ex Delta operator), he says that a CT unit is so exhaustively trained to save the hostages, if youre going in shooting everything that moves then regular infantry can do the job. ;)

Later in the year the CT unit of the Australian Commandos (TAG-East) and SASR (TAG-West) took down the North Korean vessel, the Pong Su for trafficking heroin as it was trying to escape from the Navy. Seems like they were the flavour of the year.
