So i've moved to Montana and been taking the Colt out to shoot. so maybe you AR folks could help me out. ive been wanting to attach a KAC URX rail on this and go for a Noveske barrel so it could get a little more of a range out there. Maybe SMGLee could help me out here. Would that be the best route in terms of barrels? Noveske or Krieger or somebody else? i still want to attach a Can to it like AAC SPR/m4 can. if any y'all could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.
Also AR15.com aint no help.

I think you should see what range you can get out of it now before you consider another barrel. You might find that it's already good to go.
KAC is nice, but you might also consider Daniel Defense or Larue.
Do you have an optic?

Colt makes quality barrels...I'd keep the one you have unless you want a super accurate carbine out to 1k yards

If you want more range, go for a new upper with longer barrel.

Longer barrel always helps pick up those needed fps. What kind of ammo are you running exactly? Handloads or store bought ammo? Whats the intent of the rifle? Strictly long range precision or a multi-role rifle? Flesh out its role and then modify from there.

I'm already set on larue, i like the monolithic unterupted rail. But being honest here i like the URX rail because majorly for aesthetics.
The barrels great, no doubt about that. its 16". i want something longer and give it a bit more range. most likely i would end up going for a another upper, or purchase another 6920 because of my colt fanboism or what not and gut that upper and place the noveske that with a URX then built another AR with the left over parts from the extras and sell whatevers not needed on that w'ell see.
No, no optic yet, looking at the larue's at the shop across the street from my house.

I want Long range precision out of it. but i want a multi-roleish rifle. thats why i think 18" is gtg for me.
running rem. 55gr remington atm. some of you might remember when i bought 1,000 remington 223 and HK mags for about $400 something. also pushed some 79gr out of it.

with 16" is a good ways away but its no 800-1,000 yards.

For 800-1000 yards you might want a 24" barrel with 1/8 or 1/7... But honestly, .223/5.56mm wouldn't be my first choice for that distance. Maybe6.5, 6.8, or .243, but more likely some kind of .30. But, I'm more of a pistol shooter than a rifle shooter.

I know. .308's a better choice. but i have too much time on my hands here and i want to push the envelope on a standard .223

Like James said competition guys use 24" SS barrels lately.
IMO 16" is your all purpose length barrel. Match it with some handloads or Black Hills 77gr Sierra Match King rounds.

put a 20inch white oaks barrel with a DD lite rail on it with a 4x14 leupold and put the black hills 77 grainers down it.

Dude,
This post is kind of silly. You will never shoot 1,000 yards with any 6920 without optics, no matter the grain of bullet chosen but especially with 55 gr.
Why purchase a 6920 and then switch out the barrel for a Noveske? You can buy a Noveski N4 Light Recce upper for less than $1,300 or the entire rifle complete for about $1800.
Finally, I think you would agree the 6920 will come pretty capable of good service but it might not be as reliable after some donkey takes the barrel off and puts another barrel and gas assembly back together again. You then lose a pretty solid reason for purchasing either the Colt or Novekski.
Then again, I have some redundant firearms too so don't listen to me.

Not hard at all to pull a barrel, gas block or FSB and put it back together. From the sound of if you might be better building a new upper or buying one all together.

I can hit a penny 5 miles out with a .22LR without optics or even iron sights. didnt you know? i'm a legend.
Also. if you read the OP obviously i don't plan on going out to 1,000 with a 55gr, and using optics goes without saying. im lookign for a 18" maybe.

Do you want help or do you just want to argue and get some attention? You've gotten good advice from several members. If you want an 18" barrel, have at it and let us know how it works for your 1000 yard shots.
How hard did you look at ar15.com? After a very brief search I found a thread called
"What caliber>long range?" (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=464103)
Good luck.
