Russian conscript kills guard in desertion bid

A Russian conscript armed with a Kalashnikov rifle on Sunday killed a guard in his own unit before fleeing, officials said.
Ruslan Bakhayev fatally wounded the guard who had tried to prevent him leaving his unit near Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg, local officials from the ministry of emergencies said.
His unit was part of the forces serving under the ministry.
Bakhayev was arrested by police near the city about six hours after the incident began, they said.
Desertions and cases of soldiers turning their weapons on their fellow soldiers or officers have increased in the Russian army over recent years.
Conscripts who serve two years face harsh living conditions and a tradition of violence from longer serving soldiers and some officers.
