I dont think the man is Military as I see no rank insignia on the cap, collars, or epaulets. Also the inscription says to the Rte. Honorable James something

EM Wearing a Officers Trenchcoat in front of Patton?

Neva hoppen G.I......

My W.A.G. is a Congressman, or Judge visiting 3rd Army

I think the James F. Byrnes was a congressman from SC, that is who the autograph is made to, but if that is the correct person the auto is made to, I doubt that is him in the photo. I agree don't think this is a military man in the photo, but I may be wrong. I am trying to place the centoaph or memorial. Patton was a Lt. Gen from March 43 onward to 44 right?
Trying to figure where a cenotaph or memorial, written in English, would be...maybe in UK, or USA, but has to correspond with where Patton was during that timeframe.

that may be James F. Byrnes the congressman, take a look at his photo:

if so the cenotaph may be in SC, or somewhere

General Patton and the congressman (who apparently shared Patton's politics) are posed at the (WW1) Pennsylvania Memorial; Varennes, France

Here's a link for the memorial:

(FYI - IIRC, Patton never was state-side while he was a Lieutenant General, this pick is obviously from one of Byrnes' many "fact-finding" visits to the ETO as head of the Office of War Mobilization - see the wiki entry, he was one of FDR's chief civilan advisors after all)

whew! thanks for that. It was killing me trying to figure out where that memorial was. those damn fact finding missions are(and have been) popular with politicians eh?

It all started to go wrong with the invention of steam travel. I can't imagine many senators would feel the pressing need to go on expensive junkets if they had to travel there by sail and horseback.

Thanks for your contribution; James Francis Byrnes is a good guess. No doubt about the Memorial in Pennsylvania.

I also have an eye on Hugh Aloysius Drum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Aloysius_Drum He retired in 1943 and became commander of the New York Guard. I think Patton and Drum were old friends from the Fort Leavenworth days in Kansas.
