Christian children were taken from their parents and trained for soldiers

Smart and strong ones were taken,smart ones were going to Enderun school(Also some kids were given from poor families too) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enderun_School,when Empire grow up Turkish kids start to be Janisarry too.
