JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gov. Jay Nixon is cutting an additional $200 million from Missouri’s budget and eliminating nearly 700 state employee jobs.
Nixon said the cuts are necessary because of a continued decline in state tax revenues.
The cuts announced Wednesday come on top of $430 million that Nixon eliminated earlier this year. That’s out of $23.7 billion budgeted by lawmakers for state operations and capital improvements during the current fiscal year.
The latest round includes the second-semester elimination of state aid for Missouri’s online school program. Arts and humanities also will lose half their year’s funding; some health care providers will see reductions in their Medicaid payment rates; and the state will stop taking new non-Medicaid clients for certain mental health services.

Not sure of Missouri's current fiscal state....but that's just a tiny sliver in the greater scheme of things in the current and future state of fiscal affairs.

Even if they increase taxes it won't make up the difference in fact the opposite will happen. I know since the current tax in my state would have added $20 more to the cost of a purchase that I did not actually need. Guess what I decided to keep my $20 for myself and not hand it to crooks.
Flagg do you think they may start taxing un-prepared food? Do any countries/states you know of tax food directly to the consumer?
I know prepared food is taxed in some places at least it is here in California. California is broke yet they are still figuring out how to spend money on some mass transit system to unload millions into their contractor/union mafia friends bank accounts.

Not sure......
What I expect to see over the next decade is efforts to change the goalposts on inflation...as was done in the 70's and the 90's...that way it's easier to say inflation is "only 2%" to keep the sheep from rioting, and stealth tax those dependant on government for income(social security) by reducing their real income/entitlement.
Don't even get me started on state/local government employee pensions...that's about the nastiest surprise yet to be revealed in the coming years...it's the state/local equivalent of the federal debt, but lacking in the ability to print their way out of it temporarily.
Look at Maryland's recent "Millionaire tax"........Maryland's wealthy legally split, and tax revenue dropped.....lose/lose.
There will be more of that.
But regardless we will get a generation or so of higher tax burden overall, and likely lower real tax revenue until we come out the ass of this mess...both direct and more and more from indirect taxation because we are all dirty global warming planet killers.
Peak Cheap Oil is real...we are going to be tax/price rise burdened to consume less....which will likely result in a lower quality of life and standard of living until we come out the rectum of this.
A couple US states are looking good......prety much the resource states...but the finances of the rest are basket cases to a greater or lesser degree.
It was a no brainer seeing this(and the undisclosed bits still are easy to see) if the news media actually cared.

Clarification on California State Transit funds.
A few years ago, California voters passed an initiative to dedicate a per engage of gas tax revenues to support public transit projects and operating funds. These funds only covers about 15-20% of the overall inidividual transit agency funds. The rest is a combination of federal, fare, and local revenues.
What is happening in California is that the State regularly borrows (steals) dedicated local funds towards transit, school districts, counties, and municipalities to cover the deficit in promising that the state will repay with 3% interests.
This forces local transit and municipalities to cut service, raise fares and cut staffing. As of two weeks ago, the California Supreame court said that it was unlawful for the State to raid dedicated transit funds.
A small legal victory for the smaller agencies and municipalities, but no one is counting that the money will materialize soon. Therefore the transit agencies will go ahead with the cuts.
As I said many times, for better or worst, what happens in Califorinia will happen in the rest of the country.

Here in the Great State of Missouri we dont tax and spend. Look at CA and all the **** they're in right now. We keep taxes low and cut spending. What should we do? Rise taxes, that would help a lot of people:bash:

I have no doubts that states will pull through with austerity.
But keep in mind that when tax revenues are low and the economy is down, the demand for public services goes up. Especially in education where the workforce will retrain themselves into new careers.

But you have a Democratic Governor.
Don't be surprised of the Republicans will object to the proposed cuts.

The Only thing he has gotten done in 16 legislative sessions was the freakin' stadium in the City of Industry...do you know how screwed it's going to be to get there...there's only one way in. Traffic is going to be insane, and what team will move there? Starting to think Gray Davis was good man!
Florida is in the same pickle. At lease we dodged the 2% pay cut that was in the works. They are pulling money from everywhere they can and the stimuls package we burned through. Wonder what 2010 will bring us?
