I think it would be good to start things off with a Scandinavian/Nordic president. A bit boring but calm, pragmatic, structured, and with good standing around the world.
Then the next round can go to Berlusconi and we can have outrageous remarks and hooker chasing on Sardinia.

True. Being the president of Finland, Latvia or similar small and meaningless country isn't really much of a merit on European scale. Even mayors of major European cities have more subjects, responsibilities and possibly power.

I think Jean-Claude Juncker of Luxembourg would be a good choice. Longest serving PM, well-liked, and as a leader from a really small country he's not part of the usual power games.
I don't think candidates from large countries like France, Germany, UK should be excluded in any way but I do think it will be a shift of balance in a different way should they be chosen. A German president would mean lots of power in that direction because Germany also control the most votes. How would France react to that, and so forth.

Not Balkenende I hope, he's already awful as our prime-minister.

I don't think candidates from large countries like France, Germany, UK should be excluded in any way but I do think it will be a shift of balance in a different way. Let's say a German president would mean lots of power in that direction because Germany also controls the most votes. How would France react to that, and so forth.
Lets face it, the Germans and French will veto the English option..the French and Germans having lots in common for a very long time obviously..and the English will veto the German and French option...so they will all find common ground on someone non controversial and insignificant from a scandinavian country or possibly spain.
So called ex-priminister (for about 6 months) from Ireland John (donkey) Bruton is a national embarasement, the best place for him is as far away as possible where he is now as eu ambassador to the USA.

In EU there are Germany, France, UK, Italy and Spain and then there are everyone else.
The EU is structured so that every nation has, for all intents and purposes, an equal say. In fact smaller countries have disproportionately a greater say than the bigger ones. Otherwise no small nation would want to be part of the EU.
It sucks?..
It's the same as to have a former lower sales manager in some small shop as a president of a country
In case you haven't noticed, the EU has had Presidents from small countries before and has done fine. In fact, Sweden has been doing a heck of a job so far, yet it's small by EU standards. In the end, the character and qualifications will matter more than where he/she is from. For example, Rasmussen is NATO Secretary General, not because of where he's from, but because he was seen as being the right man for the job.

Nothing. Symbolically would be rather good, I think. However, having someone from these past and present circus governments that cannot manage their own tiny countries, usually with huge corruption problems is hardly needed and would be an embarrassment.

Years ago I had friend in politics .. he insisted Bruton was absolutely honest. And he has some EU commision role already, so he is in with an outside chance at least.
Blair seems to be getting a bad reception in EU now, and it's galling to see Brown fawn over him given the lack of respect he showed Blair until he left office. Blair is a dead horse, and with Brutons anglophile outlook the flip side of the coin is support comes from there.

By the way there seems to be some confusion with regards this title, even amongst the main-stream newspapers:
Its not for E.U. President along the lines of a Countries President
its only for a President of the E.U. Commission.

There is no confusion. It's common colloquial language.
At present, there is no single President of the European Union. However it is an informal term for two posts and a theoretical combined position under the Treaty of Lisbon.

I'm of course biased, but I think former Belgian PM Guy Verhofstad would be a really good choice for European president. Any man who can create concensus and run a fvcked up country like Belgium (also an insanely pro-European country) for over 8 years has to be a king of compromise, which is what the EU really needs. Also, as current EU parlementarian and leader of the Liberal fraction in the EU parliament, he's got solid European credentials.
Tony Blair would be a face people recognize internationally and I can see the merrit in that, but I think politically the first EU President can't be from Britain, the most half hearted of European states. The British still consider Europe to be 'the continent'. Britain's failure to join the Euro under Blair, their eurosceptiscism and Blair's support of the US in the Iraq War put him out of the running to be EU President, IMHO.
