Both terms are used differently depending on the military force.

In the US and British armies, "snipers" refer to a soldier sent out in a small unit (2-3 soldiers) who'se job primarily is recon and if necessary, long range shooting of a specific target. (1000 meters)

Sharpshooters are usually soldiers within an infantry squad who carry the same rifle as the rest of their squadmates but usually have a powered scope. Their job is to take out targets of opportunity while the squad manuevers. (Enemy radio operators, officers, NCO's, vehicle drivers, crew served weapons.) These ranges are usually no more than 600 meters. The squad leader will usually direct them depending on the mission.

This is of course a simplification as previously stated, there are many variations.
