Salt Lake OKs gay rights laws with Mormon backing
By JENNIFER DOBNER and BROCK VERGAKIS, Associated Press Writers
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
(11-10) 22:39 PST Salt Lake City (AP) --
With a historic endorsement from the Mormon church, the Salt Lake City Council unanimously passed a pair of ordinances making it illegal to discriminate against gays in housing and employment.
Tuesday's action was the first time the Utah-based church — which has been steadfast in its opposition to gay marriage — has publicly supported gay rights legislation.
"The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage," Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.
The vote makes Salt Lake City the first Utah community to ban discrimination based on ****** orientation or gender identity. The measures make it illegal to fire someone from their job or evict someone from their residence because they are lesbian, bi******, gay or transgender.
"What happened here tonight I do believe is a historic event," Brandie Balken, director of Equality Utah, which works on gay rights legislation.
But Otterson said the endorsement was not a shift in the church's position on gay rights, and he stressed it "remains unequivocally committed to defending the bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman."
Though this was the church's first public endorement of legislation, in August 2008 the church issued a statement saying it supports gay rights related to hospitalization, medical care, housing or probate as long as they "do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches."
The church has been consistent in its position and has actively worked against marriage equality legislation since the 1990s.
Last year, the church came under fire for its high-profile role in the effort to pass Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative that banned gay marriage. Since the November 2008 vote, the church has been widely criticized and its temples and meeting houses have been targeted with protests and vandalism.
Church support for the ordinances is due in part to the way they are drafted to carve out exceptions that protect the religious freedoms of all churches, according to Under the exceptions, for example, a church owned school that sets rules based on its religious principles would not be forced to change them if the ordinance becomes law.
Previous Utah legislation that sought statewide protections for the gay community did not contain those exceptions.
Church support for the ordinances is due in part to the way the legislation was drafted. Exceptions in the legislation allow churches to maintain rules based on religious principles.
The church rarely involves itself with political issues, but when it does, lawmakers in both parties here tend to quickly fall in line with its position.
The church's silence on a package of gay rights bills known as the Common Ground Initiative doomed them this past legislative session, despite the bill having the support of the most popular governor in state history, Jon Huntsman. Huntsman resigned this summer to become U.S. ambassador to China.
His successor, Gov. Gary Herbert, has repeatedly said it shouldn't be illegal to discriminate against someone for being gay.

it is wrong to discriminate, so I am not surprised that LDS church supports making it illegal to discriminate. they might not agree with the gay life style/choice, but if it does not impact on their beliefs then they are doing the right thing. Is this not what Jesus would do.

Watch the south park episode to better understand the stupidity of it all.
Its no secret that im not a religious man of any faith, but these lot take the christian biscuit! Rant over.
About time they came into the real world and practiced tolerance.

Yeah, South Park, that would be a great source to better understand the Mormon Church.

Really, did you know that the LDS were the first on scene to help Katrina victims, and offer aid to many areas that have been hit by disaster?
Just because you do not have any idea as to what or who the Mormon Church is(instead prefer to get your information from South Park) I can understand why you feel the way you do, but while I may undertsnad it, I do not have to like it and I will always jump to support the LDS.

Again it shows just how little you know about Mormons. I guess you wouldn't mind having a hand in tarring and feathering a few Mormons....

Just the little fact that "Joseph Smith" was the only bloke able to read the tablets shown to him by an angel (moroneye, i think?) whilst using the decrypting tool!
The fact that they push their religion onto others by door knocking.
Have to pay subs (tiding?).
No drinking, smoking, tea, coffee etc.
Only JCLDS who have been bashing bibles long enough and well enough can be sealed in the temple.
The idea of different layers of after life dependant on your earthly life! I mean come on.
Yeah, South Park, that would be a great source to better understand the Mormon Church.
My wife was brought up in it all (we even married in a JCLDS church) and nearly all my in-laws are mormon, as mentioned, which gives me a better understanding than just the South Park episode, which was highlighted as a source of jest.

I never said the JCLDS never did any good. Good for them for helping out.

Correct! But no more than any other religon.
This is only my opinion, not a fact, you don't have to like it! I have lived round them for 9 years now and can honestly say they piss ME off.

And what?
Your hatred is based on this?
The fact that they push their religion onto others by door knocking.
Mormons are big on freedom of choice. All you have to do is tell the missionaries you are not interested.
You could invite them in and talk about current events or anything, but if you tell them you have no interest at all in the Church but you would liek to talk about other things they would oblige.
They do not push LDs on those do not show an interest!
Have to pay subs (tiding?).
Tithing, again this is something they ask you to contribute if you can, they do not force it on you.
No drinking, smoking, tea, coffee etc.
Don't forget tattoos or drugs, they request that as a Mormon you give these things up, if you convert. If you are born into the Church it is not a bad thing to not have in your life.
When we first joined, I remember sneaking up to my Grandmothrs for cups of tea, but over time it became easier to give these things up.
For me, I still maintain these values, even though I have been out of the Church for 20yrs.
Only JCLDS who have been bashing bibles long enough and well enough can be sealed in the temple.
I was joined in the Church with my family, and we converted, but I guess it would depend on your level of commitment.
The idea of different layers of after life dependant on your earthly life! I mean come on.
Which is so different to other religions out there? Or is it because they believe in Jesus Christ, Holy Ghost and God?
Yeah, South Park, that would be a great source to better understand the Mormon Church.

The thing is, they do this and expect nothing in return. It was hard to even find information about this on the internet, so please do not try and paint the Mormon Church as a group that only wish to convert the World for some type of World Domination.
Again it shows just how little you know about Mormons. I guess you wouldn't mind having a hand in tarring and feathering a few Mormons....

If you feel they preach far too much when around you, then you need to tell them how you feel, or just stop going to family functions, especially family functions that involve a family you married into, not the other way round.
Just to throw this out there. Have you thougth about meeting with a Bishop to discuss the Church in detail, so that you could probably help clear up some of your concerns? Not to convert you but just to discuss things.

Calling someones faith stupid isn't very tolerant either. Mormons are socially rock solid moral people and seem like generally good folks. Doctrinally the whole Joseph Smith getting the word out of a rock and a top hat, holy underwear, God living on the planet Kolob things is a bit out there for some though.

Gents,
I never used the word HATE in my above posts with regards to mormons on the whole, although there are aspects of the religon that i would use the word hate.
I find the written account of the book of mormon to be laughable. I don't believe in any God, thats just me, i don't mind others believing in (thats their choice) what ever they chose or what brings them comfort.
What i do hate though, is having people believe they have the right to knock at my door to push their faith. I know for a fact that mormons train at this before going on a mission as my brother in law used to train them! This is not just a mormon thing, Jehovah's Witnesses also do this. If people want religon they can easily source it for themselves. I equally hate people stood in the street, pestering me with leaflets or loud readings from the bible. In my opinion this should be kept for thier place of worship, i don't chant football songs in the street or knock on your door asking for you to read about Man City.
These are hates with regards to religon, im not going to comment on global issues built around religous difference.
This thread is about mormons and how they have only just accepted gays in any way shape or form. I still hold with my opinion that they need to get with the times.
@ Geezah, I married at the church as my family have no firm beliefs in any religon. Had we gone for C of E or registry office, my wifes family would not have come, FACT. I wanted to keep life easy so we wed in the church, it was free and actually the ceremony was very good to be fair. Nice to have people who know you, speak about you. Musical piece is also a nice touch.
Does it not seem strange to you that only one guy could read the text of the tablets of mormon? i mean seriously, if there is a god, would we all not be entitled to see his word? Also i doubt he would have to have it translated, surely he can right in English!!!!

Gents,
I never used the word HATE in my above posts with regards to mormons on the whole, although there are aspects of the religon that i would use the word hate.
Yet, when writing about the Mormon Church as a whole, your posts come across as hateful.
I find the written account of the book of mormon to be laughable. I don't believe in any God, thats just me, i don't mind others believing in (thats their choice) what ever they chose or what brings them comfort.
You're starting to contradict yourself.
You find the Mormon faith to be laughable, but are indifferent to religion as a whole. Is it because your Wife was/is Mormon and you have a problem with that?
What i do hate though, is having people believe they have the right to knock at my door to push their faith.
Mate, you need to realize that Mormon Missionaries do not believe they have a right to knock on your door. If you show no interest then tell them so and they will leave.
I know for a fact that mormons train at this before going on a mission as my brother in law used to train them!
They train Missionaries how to deal with the plublic as a whole, or how to cold sell the Mormon Church?
I do not believe that they are taught how to be pushy as I have never come across anyone in the Mormon Church that would push their faith on someone that showed no interest.
This is not just a mormon thing, Jehovah's Witnesses also do this. If people want religon they can easily source it for themselves. I equally hate people stood in the street, pestering me with leaflets or loud readings from the bible. In my opinion this should be kept for thier place of worship,
Mormons are not Jehovah Witnesses, or any other religion, so please do not paint them all with the same brush.
When I was at Richmond College, there was a guy in our class who was Plymouth Brethren. I was probably the only person in the class that could relate to him because of my faith. The others in the class refered to him as Rambo, which I found amusing as the Plymouth Brethren do not watch television, or go to the movies. He even took his radio out of his van.
i don't chant football songs in the street or knock on your door asking for you to read about Man City.
Relgion and football are not the same....
This thread is about mormons and how they have only just accepted gays in any way shape or form. I still hold with my opinion that they need to get with the times.
This shows how little you know about the Mormon Church.
There was a member of our Church who was gay, he held a high postion in the priesthood. He was required though to be celibate. He made the decision to do this, noone forced his hand, he did this of his own free will.
@ Geezah, I married at the church as my family have no firm beliefs in any religon. Had we gone for C of E or registry office, my wifes family would not have come, FACT. I wanted to keep life easy so we wed in the church,
You showed her family some respect before, why can you not continue to do so?
[b]it was free and actually the ceremony was very good to be fair[/b[. Nice to have people who know you, speak about you. Musical piece is also a nice touch.
So even though they were nice enough to bedn over backwards for you, you choose to stab them in the back?
Does it not seem strange to you that only one guy could read the text of the tablets of mormon? i mean seriously, if there is a god, would we all not be entitled to see his word? Also i doubt he would have to have it translated, surely he can right in English!!!!

Getting back to the topic, the Salt Lake City council and the LDS church should be commended for it's moral courage in passing this act.

I've seen he LDS missionaries in action. I've seen two white kids, having the 'cojones' to walk into East Oakland at night to pay a visit at a local house speaking fluent Spanish.
My co-worker did his missionary work in Quebec. He speaks fluent Quebec French and knows more about Catholicism than I do (I'm Catholic).
If were the DOD or the State Department, I would set up a recruiting office at Salt Lake City and target former missionaries.

As I mentioned before, a Gay man held a high position in the Priesthood at my Church, it was only required that he be celibate.
This was a choice he made and was happy with, while the Church accepts alot of things it still does not believe in homo****** pratices within the Church or Gay Marriage.
The religon is laughable as to how it was founded (Joseph Smith fairy tale).
They should not practice door knockers, to invade my privacy, whether they do one when told to ram it or not, they should not be there in the first place.
BritSig.......OUT (this means no more replys)!!
Mate, just hang a sign outside your house telling all men of religion to steer clear.......simple.
i don't chant football songs in the street or knock on your door asking for you to read about Man City.
BritSig.
Bloody hell, that'd be ludicrous! rofl
i moved to SLC in 1979, spent 20 years of my life there, lived with mormon family for 6 years. realized that many of the brothers and sisters were married after a while, understood why my wife wanted to move away. they tried to drive me away from taking their daughter away from the religion.
the Hardcore Mormons still practice Polygamy, they just keep it hidden very well, it wasn't just their family, it was like every other house in Bountiful. i went to their church on many occasion and saw the other polygamist families.
there was a walled compound of polygamist at the base of Little Cottonwood canyon, would drive by and see 20 young girls dressed like little house on the prarie, wearing blue jeans under their dress. they were not allowed to leave supervision
plus very corrupt, i knew many people that worked for the LDS church that owned 500,000$ houses, but only 1 person went to work and made 8$ a hour, the church was giving them the house loans and letting them work off the debts other ways.
i really feel bad for the people that fall for this, this church uses Money as a huge factor with their religon. in reality money has nothing to do with religous practices.
that place was so biased toward their people i finnally moved away, no place for a gentile....
by the way god came and spoke to me also... he said jesus was for everybody and no 1 religon was special, they are all equal. p-):bash:

Bad troll is bad. This is almost as bad as Britsigs crap. The least you could have done was troll using gay mormons since this is a thread about gays and mormons.

X2.....
As far as polygamists go, they are fundamentalists and as such are not considered Mormons. If you were truly involved with these people then you were not involved with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
