DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years: Bill Gates
FRANKFURT (AFP) - DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years at the latest, Microsoft boss and founder Bill Gates predicted.
Asked what home entertainment would like in the future, Gates said that DVD technology would be "obsolete in 10 years at the latest. If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments reproduced in German in the mass-circulation daily Bild.
"These things can scratch or simply get lost."
Gates' vision of television of the future was: "TV that will simply show what we want to see, when we want to see it. When we get home, the home computer will know who we are from our voice or our face. It will know what we want to watch, our favourite programmes, or what the kids shouldn't be allowed to see."
Interesting...

Don't you beliefe me? DVDs are song of past century... better technologies are at the comercial level of development, only reason they aren't sold yet is because noone invented TV sets good enough to use their huge storage capabilities and people still don't want to get ride their almost new homecinema sets....

the way i see it...people want to be able to collect films and music...its a status thing...you got a bunch of DVD....it say something about you...same with music...your collection is part of who you are...tangable media will never go away

This guy should be more worried about his own stuff becoming obsolete. Who the hell's gonna run out and buy Office 2010! I still use Office 97 and it does more than I need. Anyone that thinks they need the latest and greatest Office package is kidding themselves..
Windows applies as well. Windows 2000 / XP does everything a user could want or need.

What about backward comapability. And tell me how often you use polivinyls or magnetic tapes? they will put old collection into box and will start to gather new one....

I sorta agree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! But, there will come a day where there are new programs and upgrades that will make your business/life much easier. Technology is constantly evolving, times change: I'm sure some people, back in the day, thought Windows 98 and 3.1 were incredible.
Edit: I still play Super Mario 3 on the Nintendo, game rocks on the big-screen

Holodisk is disk using holograms technology tu store multiple data tracks on one layer :), its even older than CD, but much complicated, all problems were solved recently and holograms are back in buisness...
Big storage isn't flying cars or other dumb inventions... With our rising need to store everything everywhere in best possible quality dvds are already to small.... being hamster costs :)

I transform all my digital data to analouge data. I write down all my data in binaries with ink of acid-free papar and store in a dark room. This way all my **** can perserve itself for future generations.
I hope Bill Gates will be obsolete in less than 10 years.
P.S. All my music is on vinyl anyways. p-)

I think he's just trying to get into the game again...just this time he'll create some sort of half ass software that can store your movies and tv shows...After all the guy has lost a huge amount of money in the past couple of years...

Well, you can say what you want about him, but Microsoft has done more for the home PC than you are obviously aware of. If he's lost money, he didnt mind handing off a couple million here in Australia just recently for charity. For being a stupid geek, he sure has racked in a whole lot cash and made the home PC more accessible (in terms of ease of use) to basically everyone that wants to sit down and have a go.
This anti Microsoft crap is getting old.

You hit the nail on the head "has done" They've reached a saturation point where people have more than enough features and don't need to upgrade their copy of Microsoft Office every freaking year! Microsoft has this problem across the board with all of their products and will be in trouble down the road. They know it as well, which is why they are trying to diversify with things like the XBox (which is a big money looser for them anyway)
Intel is in the same boat. Who the hell is going to need to upgrade a PC that's they've purchased in the last few years. ( I bought a 3.2Ghz last year, and I'll probably have it for 10 years!)

Wrong :) ... Its all true what you said about your current needs, but there is lots of magicians with will make you need better equipment... Its same thing like with cars...from 30 years cars almost haven't changed inside but you still buy new one after 3 years of using even they can be like new for 10 years at least and if maintained well even 20 and more.... Remember that computer electroncs olds very quickly.. If some of your equipment will brake you will probably need to buy new but there will be no compatible **** with your old arhitecture or you will be lacking new conection ports, or your system will be to old or not serviced long time ago pushing you that way to buy all new equp. this is "conspiracy" that hardware and software producers are making to suck our money...
