View Full Version : Lou Dobbs leaves CNN

CNN host Lou Dobbs resigned from the network today, saying that he has been urged by political and business leaders to leave his television platform to “engage in constructive problem-solving” on national issues. He said today's show was his last.

“Over the past six months, it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffetting this country and affecting all of us,” Dobbs said, adding that he’s considering pursuing a number of options.

“As for the important work of restoring inspiration to our great free society and our market economy, I will strive to be a leader in that national conversation,” he said.

Dobbs’ break with CNN comes after he worked at the network for more than a quarter century, starting with its inception in 1980, often clashing with network executives in the process. While he originally led the network’s business coverage, in recent years Dobbs developed a populist persona that has increasingly been out of step with the network’s emphasis on neutral reporting. He has railed about the country’s immigration policy and used his show to raise questions about the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.

Several months ago, CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein discussed with Dobbs tamping down the opinion on his show, something he agreed to do. But his presence on CNN continued to be a source of friction within the network. Liberal groups have been calling for CNN to let him go and on Wednesday celebrated his resignation.

“Our contention all along was that Lou Dobbs – who has a long record of spreading lies and conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos – does not belong on the ‘most trusted name in news,’ ” said Roberto Lovato, co-founder of Presente.org, a national online advocacy organization coordinating BastaDobbs.com, a Latino-led coalition. “We are thrilled that Dobbs no longer has this legitimate platform from which to incite fear and hate.”

[Updated]: CNN President Jon Klein issued the following statement today: "Lou Dobbs is a valued founding member of the CNN family. For decades, Lou fearlessly and tirlessly pursued some of the most important and complex stories of our time, often well ahead of the pack. All of us will miss his appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom, and we're grateful to have known and worked with him over the years. With charactertistic forthrightness, Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere. We respect his decision and wish him, Debi, and his family the very best."

Honestly when I first started watching him when I was 14 I shared a lot his views, especially those on out-sourcing, however over the past seven years his ideas have drifted off the edge for me and I'm surprised he hadn't been asked to leave sooner.

I was a much greater fan of Aaron Brown.

I liked him back in the day when he was just an anchor. My parents used to watch Moneyline a lot when I was a kid. It was a shame to see him go down the opinionated info-tainment route like the rest of cable news

Lou Dobbs is annoying. He's also a talking pinhead like Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Hannity, Olbermann, Maddow, etc., all who proselytize and spew their bull**** opinions without any solicitation and have the gall to call it news, often while ironically claiming that they are impartial.

I miss Peter Jennings. :-(

Journalist Lou Dobbs (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/topics?topic=Lou+Dobbs) says gunshots were fired at his New Jersey (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/topics?topic=New+Jersey) home this month after a series of threatening phone calls to his residence.
The CNN (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/topics?topic=Cable+News+Network+LP+LLLP) Host of "the Lou Dobbs Show" told listeners on his nationally syndicated radio show that he believes the incident is related to his outspoken views on immigration. I think this is a case of looking back on history with rose colored glasses. Ronald Regan was talking about the left wing domination of news back in the 60s and many of those old timers are partisan douche bags today. Dan Rater is a good example. he tired to influence an election with fraudulent documents, yet still maintains this aura of a stead fast journalist.

I'm talking about this idea that the best journalist came from the 60s era (jennings, cronkite, rather, ect..), when in fact thats when the media started giving partisan news under the guise of impartiality. I honestly don't know if Jennings is particularly partisan or not. He hasn't ever come across that way to me, but I've never looked very carefully at his record either.

Thats what a talkshow is: Talking about issues. If you don't like other people's opinions on talk shows then don't watch them. Peter Jennings was not a talk show host, he was the anchor of evening news. Just how old are you?

Yes, they just happen to have their programs on channels such as Fox News Channel, or Cable News Network, all the while claiming it's a "no spin-zone", or that they happen to be the only impartial news source on TV. Spare me that crap.

Some of you young guys may not realize this, but a lot of folks like to retire at around 65 years of age.

Since he has the highest rated show on CNN and that network's ratings have not been stellar by any account I highly suspect they would rather he stay on. In addition, Mr. Dobbs is not alone on CNN when it comes to the view that this nation should have a more orderly and functional immigration policy combined with better border security (See Jack Cafferty).

What I'll miss most about Lou Dobbs is his staunch support for the Second Amendment. He never was shy about discussing it and advocating for adhering to it. None of the other poltical commentators even come close in my opinion including Glenn Beck who has been honored by the NRA.
