BEIJING A 5-month-old baby died in a hospital amid pleas for help from his parents while his doctor played video games online in eastern China, health authorities said Friday.
An investigation showed Dr. Mao Xiaojun was playing an online version of "Go" on the night shift and did not take the parents' pleas for help seriously, the Jiangsu province health department said in a press release.
"When efforts were being made to save the baby, the mother got on her knees in the doorway of the ear, nose and throat department and pleaded for help," the statement said.
The baby died the next morning, Nov. 4, from complications caused by an eye infection, the statement said. Officials at the state-run Nanjing Children's Hospital could not be reached for comment.
The department's statement said Mao "covered up the truth" in an initial investigation. But more probing found that she had been playing "Go" on an instant messaging system, the statement said.
Mao was stripped of her medical license and fired, and the hospital head and several staffers were disciplined.
The health department looked into the baby's death after complaints about the doctor playing online games hit the Internet.

What an odd comment. Are doctors in China known for neglecting their patients for video games?
Either way, they should throw the bitch in jail for a long time.

Sometimes in order to get the attention of the staff I just have to start taking supplies out of the cabinet to handle the situation myself.
I've had a lot of moments when I wished I had a flare gun. A fully automatic flare gun.

If prison in China is anything like prison here it's effectively a death sentence already. I imagine that it is.
Redneck, I get what you're saying now. Hospitals here in Thailand are actually pretty efficient and quality wise they're quite good too. I know a lot of people from the middle east travel to the main hospital here for operation because it has excellent service and pricing. I'm not sure what the standards are like in China, but I wouldn't expect them to be this bad, though I wouldn't expect high either. Seems to be an isolated case as well, much like what happened in the US just over a year ago.

Come to think of it, maybe he just had a ****ty day, plus working long hours. Hey, everyone's have a limit. I wouldn't say that the child's life is not important, but sometimes you just can't be bothered with anything if you're too tired or stressed.
Speculation, of course.

Yeah it's an isolated incident but something that's bound to happen considering the lack of attention.
Lotsoffreetime, you're just saying that because the baby's Chinese. If that baby was European you'd be jumping off the deep end.

Because of 1 doctor out of so many out there? Of course, the doctor should be punished severely but to generalizing the Chinese people as a whole shows that you clearly lack judgment and among other things...
At least rephrase your propaganda. :bash:

You are right, but this doctor just went too far.Anyway, the victim's parents thought it is enough to this doctor and they give up the sues.
It happened in my city,I was in that hospital when I was a kid, nice hospital with too much patients and their relatives: parents and grandparents.

O yeah, blame whole China and Chicom for attitude of one doctor. Such moronic behavior can be found everywhere... Can we blame all psychiatrist for murder leanings because of Ft. Hood case? Can we say that Polish doctors are alcoholics because there few reports about drunk doctors on duty?

I wouldn't mind it if the doctor received a bullet to the back of the skull, and her organs get sold.
RIP to the baby.

x2.. IIRC one patient in Norway died 100 m from the hospital because the ambulance was busy/unavailable. Question is, why couldnīt the police have carried the patients themselves or used a "bed" to carry this patients, instead of waiting.

Parents, especially first timers, are a bit overly cautious too. They've never been through the mill so every little thing is reported to the doc as a probable death sentence for the child. After a while, I would think some docs would just start tuning it out.
I'm not saying the inaction was acceptable or that the doctor was correct, just that I sort of understand his frame of mind. However, if a person wanted to be a doctor and didn't want to deal with hyperactive and over-protective parents then perhaps podiatry or dermatology would be more their speed. The nurses can't talk the patients into loving the docs all the time.
Medical care is like auto repair, landscaping, or any other service industry. What I mean by that is that good bit of it is doing the job right but also that doing the job to the satisfaction of the customer should not be ignored. You could do the greatest work you have ever done but if the customer believes you didn't then it means nothing or perhaps worse.

Chiptox I know what you mean.
But it doesn't change what happened.
I know the whole thing about the boy who cried wolf, but this is one of those jobs where you have to respond to every false alarm. Imagine you're a company commander in charge of a rifle company along the South Korean DMZ and the alarm rings. The last 500 alarms have all been drills or false alarms. Would you not take this one seriously? The consequences of it being the real thing are too high to make it something you can ignore.

My apologies.
It seems that the Doctor's lack of compassion and sense of obligation to the welfare of the community is a product of a society that now values hedonistic consumerism and situational ethics.
I sincerely hope the doctor is an exception rather than the rule. However, having been to China, to me, traditional customs, courtesy and consideration in that country only applies to family members, friends, co-workers, and bureaucrats - not strangers with whom they have no relationship.
It is my hope that civil society will be the norm in China.

Thanks for the clarification, as I have no direct experience with the subject matter, I bow to your first-hand knowledge. Seems a damn shame though.

ear, nose and throat department.
The baby died the next morning, Nov. 4, from complications caused by an eye infection,
Maybe if she went to the right dept. this wouldn't have happened.

Maybe if she went to the right dept. this wouldn't have happened.Well... complications from an infection could easily manifest themselves in the throat. If the baby has trouble breathing that is not an unreasonable place to try.
