MADRID (AFP) - A Spanish football fan who caught the ball which England captain David Beckham missed in the penalty shoot-out against Portugal which resulted in his team's exit from Euro 2004 has put it up for sale on the internet.
"The most incredible thing was that the ball got as far as our seats and we were very far away from the goal," said Pablo Carral, a 25-year-old from Galicia, who caught the ball.
Carral claimed that he had received an offer of 18,000 euros (22,000 dollars) from a British newspaper, but he hoped to earn more over the internet.
Beckham blamed the poor state of the penalty spot for his miss which helped the host nation qualify for the semi-finals 6-5 on penalties after the match had ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Bidding has been heated for the souvenir with the price already reaching 9,050 euros (11,000 dollars).
The ball's authenticity is proved by the inscription of 'Quarter-finals' and the date of the match, 24/06/2004.
