SINGAPORE (*******) - Singapore's military on Tuesday detonated a Japanese bomb from World War II that was discovered at a construction site near the center of the city.
"The relic is a Japanese aerial bomb," said police spokeswoman Siow Cheng Cheng. The bomb, found by a construction worker on Monday at a building site a few kilometers (miles) from the financial center, was blown up by the Singapore Armed Forces.
Last year, a cache of 843 unexploded World War II bombs were found buried under a construction site near a former colonial-era British military base.
Unexploded World War II bombs and artillery rounds occasionally turn up at construction sites and beaches.
Japanese forces captured Singapore in 1942 and Britain regained control at the end of the war and ran the island until 1963, two years before Singapore became independent.
