Some Army units have modified their equipment to help them adjust to urban warfare. At least two battalions in the 4th Infantry Division have mounted .50 caliber heavy machine guns on the back of the pickup-truck version of their Humvees, vehicles sometimes used to carry infantry troops to raids. "Gun-vees," which resembles the "technicals" used by Somali fighters, are especially useful in battling guerrilla fighters in alleys and other tight urban spaces where tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles cannot maneuver.
Found this on another web site I often go too. Does anyone know where I can find some pictures of one of these because I have been unable to locate some.

Not sure what the 4th ID is using but this is not an uncommonly used version of the HMMWV with the open back and rear door mounted weapons.
240's mounted:

Actually, the only units to get the modified Hummers you see in the photos are Army Special Operations Forces. Thay are called Heavy HMMWV's if I remember correctly.
5th SFG had some of them running around the range area of a military post in Virginia, while they were doinga work up before deploying to Kuwait last year. The inside looked cramped as hell.
M1043- M2 are open to any unit in the US. USAF SF have them, USMC...

The AF and Marine versions are both a little different from the one's used in the photos. Just like the Up Armored Hummers they started issing to the AF afew years ago. Now both the US Army and AF use Up Armored HMMWV's, but the one's I've seen our MP use is very different than the one's I've seen AF Security Forces guys rolling around in. i've even seen a couple of the AF Hummers with fully enclosed turrents mounted on them(all of them were in use by the 421st GCRS up on Ft. Dix for Phoenix Readiness)
