Zimbabwe orders nine ox-drawn 'ambulances'


HARARE, Zimbabwe, July 13 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe's Marxist government has ordered nine ox-drawn ambulances, a move an opposition leader says takes the country back to the stone age.

The ambulances will be for use by residents near the capital, the BBC reported Tuesday.

With inflation running at more than 400 percent and unemployment at 70 percent, the health ministry said it needed an economical way to transport patients to hospital.

The new carts will be particularly useful for birthing mothers and children, said David Parirenyatwa, the health minister.

Others, however, are appalled.

"We are going back to the stone ages," said Paul Themba Nyathi of the Movement for Democratic Change.

Well, I guess if patients die enroute to the hospitals the totally degraded health services will not be so noticeable. :roll:

I don't think the problem is the vehicles.....

I think the problem is:

Not having the money to buy petrol

Not having the money for spare parts

A distribution infrastructure that has imploded which means even if you have money for petrol & spare parts, you can't get it.

Not having trained people to maintain the vehicles...as they have fled with their skills to a country that will not murder them

And then if you DO have a vehicle, petrol, spares, and a good mechanic......some ZANU-PF "war veteran" thugs(possibly even born after the war) can shoot you dead and take your vehicle as compensation
