Rune Westy Nielsen, 22, were hit by an IED during a dismounted patrol in Helmand.

Danish soldier succumbs to wounds

A Danish soldier who was wounded in Afghanistan last month has died of his wounds.

A 22-year-old soldier of 2 Scout Unit in Afghanistan has died of his wounds, according to Army Operation Command (HOK).

Scout Rune Westy Nielsen was on foot patrol near Patrol Base Barazkai on October 31 when he was severely wounded in an explosion. After treatment on the spot and at the Camp Bastion Field Hospital he was transferred to Copenhagen University Hospital where he died on Tuesday.

”It is my difficult duty to inform you that on November 17 PFC Rune Westy Zacharias Nielsen died of his wounds at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen,” says HOK Major General Niels Henrik Bundsgaard.

- I regret with sorrow to announce that we are on Tuesday evening, 17 November lost one of our soldiers, then
constable Rune Westye Zacharias Nielsen died of his injuries at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, said the chief of the Army Operational Command, Major-General Niels Henrik Bundgaard.

- The wounded soldiers have always a hope that the critical situation will evolve for the better, but the hope broke unfortunately last night, and I have the greatest sympathy to the family and relatives who have lived with the same hopes, and now a difficult time in meeting, "says Niels Henrik Bundgaard.

Rune Westye Nielsen was 22 years. He belonged to the 2nd Scouts in 2nd division Facilitate Opklaringseskadron compiled on Bornholm and is part of Gardehusarhusarregimentet.

During a fodpatrulje near the patrol base Barakzai 31 October, he was badly wounded by an improvised explosive device. His companions immediately rendered first aid, and he was quickly evacuated to the field hospital at Camp Bastion. Comrades rapid action on the ground and doctors' professional efforts made it possible later to send him home to Denmark for further treatment. Despite intensive treatment at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen was his life not to save, and he died last night from his injuries at Rigshospitalet.

- Our thoughts go to Rune Westye Nielsen's family and friends who have to suffer this severe loss, says the head of the Danish Battlegroup, Col. Karsten Eiholm love. - Here in the Danish camp, the loss a heavy blow, not least for his closest comrades. We have not only lost a soldier, but also a colleague and friend. He will be missed.

- In this difficult situation, we support ourselves to each other and are confident in that both we and Rune Westye Nielsen families will have all the necessary support from our colleagues back home in Denmark. In the period ahead we will pull together and support each other. We will take the necessary time to talk to each other. Likewise, our chaplains have a solid support for us, and specialized psychologists are already down here to help us move forward.

- In these hours we stand together shoulder to shoulder. The flag is at half mast, and we remember our fallen comrade. In the morning the sun rises again and we continue to perform our duties in his spirit, ending Colonel Eiholm Karsten Kjaer.
