The foreign Legion is alone in the French Army to have preserved the tradition of these majestic column headings of bearded pioneers, gantés of white carrying axes and a****s. The presence of bearded pioneers, carrying the axe and the a**** of leather, at the head of the units of the Legion recalls the habit of the Large Army which always placed the sappers at the head, in "opening of road". The pioneers perennialize the image of the légionary builder. Each regiment of the foreign Legion has its pioneers where the vocation "work" remains always alive and complementary to other missions. They carry the behaviour of the regiment with the a**** of buffalo, the axe and the gloves. After 1843, the gloves are bleached and in 1844, a special havresac in black skin, with cast iron for the axe, replaces the case fixed at the streamer. The same year, the habit of the port of the beard and the moustache for the pioneers becomes an obligation. The badge of the sappers, carried on the top of each handle represents two surmounted cross axes of a grenade. Every year, April 30, the pioneers of the "head office" have the honor, to escort the carrier of the hand of Captain DANJOU and to open the procession of the Legion on July 14 in Paris. Practically all the units of the Legion except for the ßt REC and the 2nd REP, align sappers at the head of column.
Basically, Combat Engineers.

British Army soldiers are offered tea while on a joint patrol with Iraqi police in a market in Basra, on July 13, 2004. Britain's pre-war intelligence about Iraq's weaponry was seriously flawed and a notorious government dossier about the threat Baghdad posed went to the "outer limits" of information available. That was the main conclusion of a high-level inquiry into British intelligence, released by former top civil servant Lord Butler on Wednesday.

New NRA Posterchild?
John Kerry--whose record of words and misdeeds on firearms rights has earned him a key place among the most solid "F" candidates ever rated by the National Rifle Association--is now posing as a self-styled"lifelong hunter and gun owner," a faux good old boy who says, "I believe in the Second Amendment."
But as someone who has hunted, he`s not one of us. He`s a silver-spoon Boston Brahman--an ideological blood brother to his mentor, Teddy Kennedy.
He`s married to a multi-millionaire heiress whose "favorite charity," the Tides Foundation, has pumped a small fortune into anti-gun rights schemes.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN: German soldiers of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) patrol in the streets of Kabul, 14 July 2004. International peacekeeping troops in Kabul have admitted that they had unwittingly aided a US vigilante group running a private jail, after being duped into believing they were US Special Forces.Three US nationals and at least four Afghans were arrested by Afghan authorities last week for conducting a private "war on terror" and holding eight Afghans in a private house for eleven days without authority.

He's right. Airfarce nobs get National Defense and some other ribbon for finishing bootcamp.
Don't denegrate the fighting prowess of the Frenchies. Don't mistake political fumblings and (previous) failings by general officers with lack of individual bravery on the part of the French soldier. The French have fought hard since ww2 to maintain their empire. They mainly fight in places you have never heard of, and mostly in LICs.
