Funny China made second. I mean, they may have more people, but most of their military equipment is even more outdated then Russia's and or just cheaply made. They may have a high budget, but for the next while, they will need it in order to be able to compete with Russia and USA (even if Russia has a smaller budget then China in terms of defense).

I think military history should also be taken into account with respect to military strength. By that I mean the numbers of wars/conflicts that a country has successfuly undertaken or succeeded with respect to military objectives.

Thats a bad list I think that The training of soldiers. Conflicts involved in and ability to win said conflicts. Canada should be ahead of alot of those nations we have the ability to produce a strong organized well trained and technologically advanced military. More so than North Korea and sweden.

It seems the chart is working on numbers alone rather than quality or modernity of equipment/troops/training. But how can you quantify which country has the better gear and troops overall without being subjective? Sure, Janes and other organizations try to quantify such things but then it hits the interwebz and devolves into another 5.56 vs 7.62 mudwrestle.

IMO the first 4 places are questionable now, but will certainly be cemented in the near future.

well the data they used certainly is not correct in many ways
i just looked at Germany:
what ------ list --- reality
destroyers___3_______0
frigates_____13_____15
amphibious___6______2
and so on. they say we have 130 navy ships - this would then include rowing boats etc ^^
they also mention 40.000 paramilitaries - this would be the federal police which was a paramilitary unit in the beginning - a few decades ago. now its just ordinary police
there also is no way we have more then 2000 tanks left even including those in storage and museums ^^
one the other hand they list 49 SpHs - we have 157 PzH 2000 alone - not counting some old M109s that might still be in storage
also 1364 pieces of towed artillery - we have none left in use besides some 105mm guns for ceremonial purposes.
and so on..... ^^

C.I.A. world factbook.
As far as I know, the world factbook only shows numbers of people fit for military service in a specific country, and some general info on its economy, culture etc...

You got it right. Altough I'm Polish. But yeah, I bet that would drive back your little invasion.

We didn´t even make it to the list.
Well no need to be there, we are few but we last longer, hehe.
Actually, just read article "Äyräpää, 5 March 1940 - The Counterstroke as told by the Combatants" from Sotahistoriallinen aikakauskirja #28 (The Journal of Military History #28) and in the article it stated some effective numbers of Finnish troops by the end of the Winter War, for example in JR23's (Infanrty Regiment 23) first battalion had only 19 men in three companies; 14 men in the first company, 2 men in second company and 3 men in 3rd company. This was the situation on March 12, just one day before the end of Winter War.
So we just need to manage with fewer numbers and not making it to any lists :roll:

The list is not 100% accurate, it's debatable too. Some nations should be pushed back or forward on the brackets to some, others are missing who are more deserving according to others.

This list is bullcrap.
different militaries have different capabilities... different structures and serve in different geopolitical situations.
In other words, comparing militaries is like comparing apples and oranges.
In other words, comparing militaries is like comparing apples and oranges.
The only way to verify that list is WWIII.
BTW, I prefer apples.

I'm hurt that someone thinks Turkey and Israel's militaries are stronger than South Korea's...

This rating is largely based on the number of soldiers and paramilitaries available in each country rather than their actual tactical and strategic capabilities.

Not only that, Israel will be at the bottom of the list if it was the number we took into account.

True, therefore it can be stated the list is based off horribly incorrect information and constructed by those greatly lacking in military knowledge. India's military is FAR too high on that list to even consider it feasible. Half-wit assumptions drove that list.

I dunno about others, but I'm looking at South Korea and what the hell.
Active Military Personnel: 687,000 [2008] ---> 655,000 (2008, wrong; 687,000 was 2006~2007)
Active Military Reserve: 4,500,000 [2008] ---> 3,040,000 (2008, wrong)
Tanks: 1,060 [2004] -> 2,300 (2008, wrong)
Towed Artillery: 4,000 [2004] -------------------> I dunno
Self-Propelled Guns: 500 [2004] ----------------> about 1,500 (2008, wrong)
Multiple Rocket Launch Systems: 185 [2004] ---> I dunno
5,400 (artillery + MLRS combined)
Anti-Tank Guided Weapons: 58 [2004] ---> 58? LOL
Total Navy Ships: 85 ---> 170 (2008, wrong)
Destroyers: 6 [2004] ---> 10 (2008, outdated)
Submarines: 20 [2004] ---> 10 (2008, wrong)

Total Aircraft: 538 [2004] ---> 740 (2008, wrong)

is the CIA really the source for all those infos?
Ambassador

Kadrun, South Korea's military with nuclear weapons taken into account ranked 9th in the world in 2007 according to CIA. (http://pann.nate.com/b1841882) (and SK don't have nukes lol)
Some people in this world still do know their stuff so don't worry.
Kadrun
11-29-2009, 04:47 AM
I don't know nor I care about the rank, but those numbers are released to the public every year and it is very easy to find.
So I suppose CIA (since that thing is using CIA as source) is very lazy? ;)
Ambassador
11-29-2009, 04:50 AM
Not really. The CIA just don't easily release classified information to armchair generals like globalfirepower. They are not lazy - they just aren't obliged to release information to the public.
And globalfirepower just twisted CIA's public data to suit their half-assed needs.
(and SK don't have nukes lol)
We all know you have plenty of hidden nukes.
