COPS could be banned from saying "Evenin' all" - after claims it confuses minorities.
The greeting, made famous by 1960s TV bobby Dixon of Dock Green, falls foul of new guidelines.

Officers have now been told: "Don't assume words for time of day, such as evening or afternoon, have the same meaning."

The advice, in a Warwicks Force handbook, was branded idiotic by the Police Federation's Peter Smyth.

He said: "In pursuit of political correctness we're in danger of looking silly."

The Plain English Campaign added: "Common sense must prevail."

The ruling emerged as the nation's emergency services revealed their language dos and don'ts.

Essex Police are told calling kids "boy" or "girl" may insult them, while "child or youngster" indicate "unreliability or dishonesty". And London firefighters are told "businessman" reinforces stereotypes.

Last night Warwicks Police said: "In some countries, evening mealtime is 5-7pm but this might be different, say, for an American family."

How effective are the police in Britain when they're not even allowed to use normal human speech?

:) Thankfully they are quite effective. There are loads of stories like this one in the UK Press practically everyday, but I've never seen any evidence that they actually apply in the real world. I've seen UK police use some very choice language when making arrests p-)

A recent TV example: (Caution:Bad language) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFUMeHQH580

That CO19, so it's not exactly the average Peeler.

The part that offends me, is the fact that using friendly language might offend minorities.

"Armed Police, gents!"

See, that's a polite cop right there :)

Great stuff

A small lesson in tabloid journalism -

The headlines states that the police have been told they can't say it.
The first line of the article states that they could be told they can't say it.
Once you get a few lines into it it says the advice in a handbook.

So basically it's bollocks.

Another soon to be offended minority that will take to the streets and make Blighty wish it only had chavs to deal with.

Gee, I'm glad the "skells", "mopes", "dirtbags", and "sh*tforbrains" we dealt with didn't have lobbying groups...p-)

surely there are other worldly concerns rather than political correctness for political correctness's sake, lol.
