Two American Marines post the guard at the US Embassy in Monrovia 27 July 2003. Fighting erupted during the late afternoon near the embassy. The rebel Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) said it would not withdraw from the capital until peacekeepers deploy.

Governmental troops rest around a fire in an abandoned building used as a headquarters on the front line 27 July 2003 in the outskirst of Monrovia. Liberian rebels today captured a strategic bridge in their battle for Monrovia as the US ambassador urged them to withdraw from the capital of the war-ravaged west African country. The rebels of Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) "have crossed the bridge already and they are on the offensive," General Benjamin Yeaten told AFP early Sunday. Government forces have been ordered to prevent the advancing rebels from opening a new eastern front in their assault on the capital, Yeaten said while rain continued to pound the capital, as it has for days.

Government combatants patrol in Monrovia 26 July 2003. Liberian President Charles Taylor repeated his pledge to step down to end further bloodshed when an international peace-keeping force intervenes in the civil war. The Liberian capital has been wracked by an upsurge of fighting between loyalist forces and the rebel Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths.

Unfortunately 3/4 of the photos from Liberia show splattered people which I'm not going to post.

What is that long rifle in the 5th and 6th picture? Sniper (There's no scope)?

How come the guy standing near the wall in the 6th picture is all professionally dress while everyone else is in T-shirt?

I saw the news yesterday and they had this very scene playing. By the looks of the shell cases on the floor, Ballcap looks like he shooting some kind of .50cal. Hopefully the gun experts around here will weigh in.

I'm not sure what that rifle exactly is. But I have a strong guess.

I think it's the Panzerbuchse M39 anti-tank rifle, used by the Germans during WW2. It's calibered in 7.9mm special cartridge, about 162cm long, and weighs about 12.6kg. The rifle was manually loaded after each shot, and reportedly had a huge recoil.

<img src=http://ww2photo.mimerswell.com/vapen/d/antitank/05239.jpg>

By the way, these Liberian "government soldiers" really look ragtag and crappy....

Argyll
07-29-2003, 09:46 AM
Nah I think it's a .50 cal bolt action rifle of some sorts!
Think about availability of ammo etc!Rag tag bunch they maybe, but an AK in thier hands is just as dangerous as any regular soldier!

Jooglae
07-29-2003, 09:51 AM
Yeap.....Kalashnikovs in any person's hands would be lethal.....

Only if they would try to aim the damn gun.

Upfrontreporting
07-29-2003, 12:56 PM
Yup.. bullets in this conflict aren't aimed and send off with a "name" on it, here they are send off with a "to whom it may concern" stamped on it.

With regards to the.50 cal. sniper it looks like some sort of Eastern European design (but I'm no expert), Hungary, Bulgaria or Serbia!?
Anyways, a lot of the AK's used in the pictures out of Liberia are of
the Yugoslavian/Serbian variant. :o

your probably safe if there shooting at you :D
an Aid worker was interviewed on the radio saying monrovia was quiet only random Ak47 fire and the normal 14 year old soldiers on checkpoints
not the nine year olds the press had pictures of.
He was asked if maybe he had'nt been there a bit long if he thought that was normal
he was just waiting for the yanks to turn up and restore order

Upfrontreporting was right. The two pictures of the first postshow a Yugoslavian M93 .50 "Crna Strela" sniper rifle without magazine and scope.

I´ve only discovered few Yugoslavian Ak47 variants on the pictures from Liberia. Most Aks seem to be from Chinese origin. I even saw an old WW2 SVT rifle in use with the rebels

That class of 2003 set is incredible... as for the Nigerian peacekeepers, I'm really glad they're there and that more are on the way. I remember arguing at the very beginning of the flare up that African nations should send troops and it looks like they're holding up their end of their UN responsibility. What was humorous though, was the headline "8 Marines arrive in Liberia!". Apparently after the Iraq invasion, Marines have achieved a god-like reputation as one senator* was quoted as saying "I wasn't aware that more than that was necessary."

1) You did not mention in any post that you did not get it.

So I knew you got it.

2) You think it's not funny and you post that. For some reason you share your sense of humour and hope we'll get it.

I don't care. I get it, but I don't care.

3) My post was for some people, who, while not getting it, post publicly that they don't get it.

Not that it was funny or not.

It's like a group of guys standing around. One tells a joke. Some of the others laugh and one guy goes...

"I don't get it."

Usually people look askance at him, raise their eyes to heaven, shrug, shake their heads, and sigh. Or even start laughing again...

Ya see... not only did the guy not get it but he had to blurt it out too... for some reason. Instead of staying quiet.

Got it? :-)

Yeah, the irony is that people are starving in the streets and are getting killed over him. His fighters, high on crack, were getting paid off - with what - one might ask. Now you see him leave in one of the BIGGEST imported SUV while he accuses the US of attempting to steel Liberia's Diamonds, Gold and natural resources. I wonder how much $$ he's taking with him.

I guess a Gold Caddie Escalade would be more Pimpin' though......

Soldier who declined to be identified eh? :)

In addition to the 150 or more Marines in the quick-reaction force, smaller numbers of U.S. troops will perform other missions:

-- About a dozen Navy SEALs, the Sea-Air-Land forces that are the Navy's special operations troops, will search the waters of the Monrovia port to clear any obstacles to the arrival of ships carrying food aid. A preliminary search of those waters began Wednesday, and Schwartz said a more extensive search will be done when the Nigerian peacekeepers begin moving to the port.

anyone know why the seals landed in plain view of the public? i saw the live footage today on local news and the locals didnt look surpised. they were lined on the beach allong with camera men etc. this reminds me of the gulf war 1 landing with lots of people there. did they go on to secure something? was it a show of force or a feign? were they just making sure nothing was bad there as more would come that route?

Navy SEALs waded onto the beach adjoining the U.S. Embassy today, waving cheerily at applauding Liberians and going about routine business in a high-profile way.

"Would you help us move the people from the beach so we can survey it for you?" one SEAL asked a Liberian man.

The SEAL wore a floppy hat soaked from the slog ashore and a pair of rubber flippers on his back. He declined to give his name or rank but explained that the mission was to note depths and obstacles for any possible amphibious landing by the 2,100 U.S. Marines who remain aboard the USS Iwo Jima and two other U.S. warships offshore.

"If they need to support any other forces here, we can tell them what the beach here is like," he said.
