View Full Version : Service in the Wehrmacht - an overview

The conscription was introduced with the law of the 21.5.1935.

The length of active service had been 2 years (Actually 1 year in the first place but on 24.8.1936 before the retirement of the drawn conscripts of fall 1935 the active service time was increased to 2 years. Only a small number (e.g. married) were retired after one year of service)
In fall 1935 the age group 1914 then 1915, 1916 and 1917 had been drafted.
The youngest age group trained in WWI had been age group 1900. In between there had been a gap of the "white age groups" which had no military training.
To make them available as reserve personel for the army there had been "E-units" (supplementary units) next to the active troops.
Within these the "white age groups" received short military training lasting 2; later 3 months.
At first the age group 1913 was drafted in 1936; then 1937 the age groups 1912 as well as 1908 and older.

Enforcement
example Heer; Luftwaffe and Navy of course featured abreviations.


A) Sort of basic training of 8-12 weeks
- Weapons and shooting training at least with K98k; but if possible also handgun and grenade
- basic tasks of combat service such as securing, marching, defense of positions
- guards procedures
- behaviour during action with chemical weapons
- formal drill
- sports training

Complete training in the respective role; i.e infantry squad, gunner on his gun, gunner on tank etc.
example: infantry
- weapons training with the light MG, later also smg
- operation wihtin the infantry squad in all types of combat
- scouting, outpost, vanguard group during march
- construction of filed fortifications
parts of the complete training could be also dealt with in the basic trainning e.g. cavalry.

C) In case of need a special trainiing was carried out either prior to or during the complete training e.g.
- driving school
- training as gunner (artillery, tank, but also mortar)
- training with the heavy MG
- training with signals equippment

D) Stay at training areas 1-2 times a year for 2-4 weeks. Attendance of manoevres; preferably in fall so in general at the end of the first and second year of service.

E) Qualified characters could be promoted to the ranks of "Gefreiter" or "Obergefreiter" at the end of the second year of service and then got a training as squadleader.
There was also the possibility to do the training as "Unteroffizier" of the reserve during the two years of service. A promotion was given with the end of the two years of service.
