View Full Version : Kerry's speech to NAACP digs at Bush

PHILADELPHIA - Democrat John Kerry, taking advantage of a spat between the NAACP and the White House, accused President Bush on Thursday of dividing America by race and wealth, and promised as president to represent “all of the people.”

advertisement

“The president may be too busy to talk to you,” Kerry told the partisan crowd, “but I have news for you: He’s going to have plenty of time after Nov. 2.”

Bush rejected an invitation to address the NAACP. He has not spoken to the civil rights group since the 2000 campaign, when the NAACP National Voter Fund ran an ad that portrayed Bush as unsympathetic to the dragging death of James Byrd in Texas.

Since the campaign, leaders of the NAACP have called Bush an illegal president, compared his anti-abortion views to the Taliban and called his trip to Africa a photo-op. A Bush spokesman blasted the NAACP on Thursday.

The president “has many friends who belong to the NAACP and respects their proud history of championing civil rights,” White House communications director Dan Bartlett said. “Differences of opinion and opposing views are of course part of the national debate. Yet the current leadership of the NAACP has clearly crossed the line in partisanship and civility, making it impossible to have a constructive dialogue.” FREE VIDEO

July 15: John Kerry, at the NAACP Convention, takes jabs at President Bush for not attending the civil rights group's gathering.

“Despite the current leadership’s intolerant views, President Bush will continue to reach out to members of the NAACP and African-Americans from across the country,” he said. Bush addresses the Urban League, another civil rights group, next week.

Radio ads
His campaign began airing ads on black radio stations in Philadelphia, site of Kerry’s address, as well as Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, Mo., Cleveland, Toledo, Ohio, and Milwaukee. It calls the Massachusetts senator’s voting record “extreme” and spotty.

NAACP chairman Julian Bond poked fun at Bush for refusing to address the group because of its criticism.

“If he didn’t go anywhere people criticize him, he’d never leave home,” Bond said, drawing laughter.

In Washington, Bush’s education secretary, Rod Paige, took aim at Bond and NAACP president Kweisi Mfume for what he called “hateful and untruthful rhetoric about Republicans and President Bush.” At the convention, NAACP officials have described some black organizations as mouthpieces of white conservatives and have said Bush’s education law disproportionately hurts minorities.

When Kerry took his turn on stage to the soul anthem “We are Family,” he said, “I will be a president who is truly a uniter, not one who seeks to divide one nation by race or riches or by any other label.”

He noted the high unemployment rate for blacks, and said Bush had not done enough to improve education, the economy and civil rights for all Americans, including blacks.

Sudan concerns
In a foreign policy tracked closely by blacks, Kerry said as president he would use “the full weight of American leadership” to help stop genocide in Sudan. A spokeswoman said that could include military force, but not as a first step.

“This administration must stop equivocating,” Kerry said.

After his speech to the NAACP, Kerry was beginning his “Front Porch Tour” in Philadelphia suburb of Lansdowne. The Kerry campaign is putting a new spin on an old technique — trying to get the candidate more time sharing concerns with regular Americans.

While Kerry is visiting with voters in the swing state of Pennsylvania, his running mate John Edwards will be visiting voters on a front porch in New Orleans. Although Kerry and Edwards were officially kicking off what they say will be a regular feature of their campaign trips, Kerry sat with voters on their porch at least once before.

Last month in Columbus, Ohio, Kerry chatted with two sisters who brought out iced tea and talked about the struggles of raising their kids in a tough economy. The normal intimacy of a front-porch chat was somewhat disrupted by the glare of the flood lights brought in by the campaign and more than a dozen national journalists and staff who watched from the lawn.

Kerry said the importance of the porch visits is “going to the homes of ordinary citizens across this nation and talking with them about the values that matter most to them — values you live by every day — family, responsibility, service, opportunity, inclusion, fairness, faith.”

Anyone know if Bush offered a reason for not going (other than the obvious of not wanting to walk into a "trap")? The NAACP is more or less calling Bush a racist, which even i dont agree with.

I got this in an email this morning,

Every year an independent tax watchdog group analyzes the average tax burden on Americans, and then calculates the Tax Freedom Day. This is the day after which the money you earn goes to you, not the government.

This year, tax freedom day was April 11th. That's the earliest it has been since 1991. Its latest day ever was May 2nd, which occurred in 2000.

Notice anything special about those dates?

Today John Kerry gave a speech in which he claimed Americans are actually paying more taxes under Bush, despite the tax cuts. He gave no explanation and

provided no data for this claim.

Another interesting fact: Both George Bush and John Kerry are wealthy men.
Bush owns only one home, his ranch in Texas. Kerry owns 4 mansions, all worth several million dollars. (His ski resort home in Idaho is an old barn brought over from Europe in pieces. Not your average A-frame).

Bush paid $250,000 in taxes this year; Kerry paid $90,000. Does that sound right? The man who wants to raise your taxes obviously has figured out a way to avoid paying his own.

The Bush White House is counting on corporate America to save its surplus.

But the corporations might not show up for duty. And if they don't, the president's budget could be in very hot political water.

The White House is expecting American corporations to voluntarily pay $5 billion in taxes two weeks ahead of time, something corporate tax analysts doubt will occur. That extra $5 billion in revenue the White House expects corporations to pay ahead of time is very important indeed.

Without it, the Bush budget surplus would be $5 billion smaller, and that would mean Bush has tapped into the Social Security surplus, something he has repeatedly vowed not to do. The White House released revised surplus numbers Wednesday, showing a federal surplus of $158 billion, a mere $1 billion more than the Social Security surplus.

But that $158 billion surplus only exists if American corporations pay $5 billion in taxes two weeks early.

"There is zero chance any member of the Fortune 100 would ever pay corporate taxes ahead of time," said Clint Stretch, director of tax policy for the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche. "Corporations do not have the slightest interest in paying corporate taxes early. They're not going to volunteer money to the government."

Stretch says large corporations pay the lion's share of corporate taxes. All employ sophisticated teams of accountants and would never send the government millions in revenue it could hold and gain interest from.

The $1.35 trillion tax cut Bush signed this year shifted $33 billion in corporate tax collections from this fiscal year to the next fiscal year. That pushed the deadline for sending corporate taxes to Washington from September 15 to October 1.

Stretch said major corporations would fire any tax director or head of accounting that sent millions in revenue to Washington two weeks ahead of time.

White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels was nonchalant about the expected corporate windfall.

"Folks at Treasury believe that some folks will go ahead and pay it (this year) anyway," Daniels said. "Didn't get the memo, I guess, but that's the answer."

But Stretch said it is highly unlikely large and midsize corporations are unaware of the date change. He said even smaller corporations monitor such information and build it into their payment schedules. The exception, he said, would be very small corporations that use "automatic pilot" software to calculate times to send tax payments to Washington.

"But that's not where the revenue comes from," Stretch said, saying large and midsize corporations account for at least 90 percent of all corporate tax revenue.

Michelle Davis, a spokeswoman for the Treasury Department, said that in the past some corporations paid taxes ahead of time, but she could not cite any dollar figures. "We have seen similar behavior in the past," she said.

Davis said that when Congress gave the airlines two extra months to pay excise taxes in 1997, the government collected 30 percent of the revenue ahead of the new deadline.

She said there was no way of knowing whether corporations would follow suit this time, saying the $5 billion estimate was based on an "average behavior pattern."

"I doubt if it's high-minded civic duty," Davis said.

Fleischer suggested that big corporations would not mind sending in their tax payments early.
White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, when asked if Bush or any senior White House official asked any corporations to pay their taxes ahead of time, said: "Not that I'm aware of."

Fleischer also suggested big corporations would not mind sending taxes to the government ahead of time.

"As you can imagine, any time there is any calendar-driven deadline, some actions can fall before it, some after it," Fleischer said. "And even though they are allowed to pay it later, they choose not to. For them, it's just a short number of days, really, that's a difference."

When the administration unveiled new budget numbers this week that showed the nation's surplus had shrunk from a projected $281 billion in April to $158 billion in August, it took a lot of flak from congressional Democrats. Among the charges: Democrats said Bush had squandered the surplus.

The White House said the country was still running the nation's second largest surplus in history and that Bush had kept his promise not to touch excess Social Security tax revenue. Social Security payroll taxes this year will exceed benefits paid by $157 billion. This amount is known as the Social Security surplus, and Bush and congressional Democrats have vowed not to spend this surplus.

If the surplus reported by the White House had been lower than $157 billion, Bush would have broken his promise not to tap the Social Security surplus.

And unless corporate America comes to the rescue with those early tax payments, that's exactly what could happen.
