I find these photos very interesting, for the reason that they exceptionally well show the vacuum that is generated at the end of the barrel :)

It was cancelled because it wasn't all that special. It was one of the first programs that got the axe back in 2001 due to budgetary reasons officially.

The M109 Paladin is still one of the best in the business. If it ain't broke...don't fix it.

Exactly. The IDF improved on the M109 (http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/vehicles/self_propelled_artillery/m109/Doher.html) and there is always this (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/pzh2000.htm) ...

Rumsfeld cancelled it because he wants a "lighter army". Btw, weight of the Crusader is 41t, compared to 55t for the PzH2000.

Some said in order to keep the system on target at its high rate of fire, it had to weigh more to keep it stable and at 41t, that was fine. Still, it was too heavy for some......

Too bad it never made it.

Cool that you actually can see the gas-fumes exit in a pattern from the bores..

Why is it firing almost parallel to the ground ?

You couldn't get much range firing like that and you risk injuring friendlies too.

It aint a tank for gawds sake.

Prepare for any scenario(s) that may occur. If memory serves me correct, a USMC arty unit came under armored attack during the 1991 gulf war. The Marines lowered their M-198's parallel to the ground and let the Iraqi unit have it.

The attack was driven off.

it's very efective against the ground firing positions israeli artilery howitzers were very efective against palis position located inside the building

The Crusader was the only US MRSI arty in Development, that is what made it so special.

I don't think this is right. Rumsfeld doe not get to make this decision, spending comes down to Congress. I seem to remember that Congress voted no on that particular appropriation. Maybe I am wrong. Anybody know for sure?

Hey, Memphiz, nice pics of the French GIAT's 105 mm Light Gun...used by Canada and Thailand but not France to the despair of the 35th RAP (Airborne Artillery Regiment) of the 11th Airborne Brigade.

Pentagon Terminates Crusader Program
By Linda D. Kozaryn
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 8, 2002 -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that he has decided to terminate the Crusader artillery system.

The decision is "not about one weapon system," Rumsfeld said, but about "a strategy of warfare that drives the choices we must make about how best to prepare the nation's total forces for the future. … We have an obligation to ensure that U.S. forces will overmatch the capabilities of any potential adversary now and into the future."

The president has agreed to recommend to Congress an amendment to the fiscal 2003 budget request to terminate Crusader and to reallocate the funds to more transformational programs. Defense officials are working with the Army to prepare the details of an amended budget request that will be submitted no later than May 20.

Rest is here (http://www.defenselink.mil/news/May2002/n05082002_200205085.html)

Yes, Congress allocates the funds, but the Sect. of Defense is the one that can either make or break a system as he pretty much sees fit.
