View Full Version : M4 feed problem.

since ive gotten my rifle its been feeding just fine until now. every time the bolt is release to reload, it slams the round into the feed ramp and buries the bullet inside the case and spills gunpowder all inside the magwell. if it DOES manage to seat correctly the bullet is damaged and cut up to hell by the ramps. sometimes its damaged so badly the bullet splits in half marking two uneven sized holes downrange.
wtf?

What rounds are you using? Sounds like you're using some type of varmint round that arent crimped.

1. Check Magazines and pay particular attention to the Followers and Springs.
2. Check the Feed Ramps for Burrs.

What rifle? Upper/combo? Ammo?
Yeah, had the same problem. New bushmaster m4, fired 3-400 rounds of wolf (the cheap stuff in the steel casings) and it slowly started to have these short strokes, where it doesn't cycle the bolt all the way back, therefore when it comes back, it hits the next round half way. M193 high pressure stuff works great, but the lower pressure stuff doesn't anymore. After a bunch of back and forth, I brought it in tonight and 4-5 guys looked at it, and they found that a couple of the metal rings on the bolt were broken and there's a bit of a gap there. They're also thinking that the gas tube might be clogged with the very dirty burning wolf ammo. All of it is now on its way back to bushmaster. I'll let them figure it out. I ordered tons of M193 and black hills blue box, so it's high quality (and unfortunately expensive) stuff for me from now on. I had started a thread on ar15.com about it. Tonight's discovery was after everything mentioned in the thread.

A friend's Bushy has the same problem, but he's using his own reloads. Wonder if quality control at Bushmaster is starting to slip?
It's hard to say. I've had the steel case ammo get stuck in the chamber something nasty about 3 times. The massive force it took to extract it manually might have put some crazy stress on the bolt and extractor, which might have broken it. Only they can say for sure at this point, but I'm using only brass from now on.

I'm using a COLT 6940 HK steel mags and HSM montana made 52 grain Hollow Point Boat Tail match ammo.
the Black Hills and Remington ammunition work flawlessly.
but the HSM ****ing falls apart and spills powder and knocks the bullet inside the case.

I wonder if firing all the steel cased Wolf could be the culprit.

I have a bushmaster, and use Wolf, I must admit, I will not be getting that problem, but those 3 little rings on the back of the bolt are important, there is a gap between them, when you clean the bolt and reassemble never have the gap line up, they always must stagger, if not it will not have full pressure.
at the OP, x2 on linedoggie, check the mags, I don't know how many you have but the steel GI mags are famous for miss feed problems, I would recommend either getting magpul innards or pmags (i love my pmags best mag I have ever used).

wolf is some of the worst ammo out there, I have over 1K rounds, but it is cheap, it does not effect me anymore, seeing I have gone piston, but I not buying it any more, I get the Remmington PMC that is sold just as cheap here.
@hood, when I get round to purchasing bulk ammo again, I look for lake city, that stuff I heard is good, I has 300 round 2 years ago, it was great ammo.

Looking forward to seeing what it looks like.
I've got an L1A1 w/ T-48 receiver, and am working on kits for a Belgian/Imbel/Argentine, an Israeli w/ Imbel barrel, a South African/Rhodesian, and an Stg/G1-style. I'm waiting on the upper receivers for two of them, and need to order two more uppers when finances allow.

As I mentioned earlier, I've heard a lot of negative and little positive about HSM. Negative as in "I'll throw the whole 1000 rounds in the trash" for exactly what you showed a picture of. Certainly not something you want to trust your life, or even a match to.

How did you get a Inch pattern stock on there if the receiver is a T48?

I dont see any crimp on those rounds. I would stop using those ASAP. Might have a kb on your hands.

Kaaaa-Booom! Khatastrophic Bhooum...
Basically, as the round retreats into the casing, the chamber pressure rises when it's fired... Worse, if round gets loose and deposits itself into the bore when unfired casing "falls out" - next round jams loose bullet and live cartridge and goes Kaaa-Blllaaaam through your bold and the magazine.
I second that the round has no crimp on the case mouth and no cannelure on the bullet - that's a bad juju on .223

Having no cannelure isnt bad on a bolt action, but Im sure you know that. Just clarifying for others.

Tsk tsk. Sad that someone wastes all that money on a colt when you could get something of the same or greater quality for less.
Anyway to stay on topic, I think HSM is intended for bolt rifles.

Appologies but I didn't list any brand names. I just like to spend less so I can buy large ammounts of quality ammo.
